Scrabble. Until last week, the most fun I'd had playing it was when my Sweet Dear Grandmother used the "S-word" to use up some letters. I suppose she could have arranged those same letters to spell "THIS" or "HITS", but she chose the Big S. My Grandma. Explains a lot genetically.
Anyway, conventional Scrabble is a little too slow for me. I enjoy it, I do crossword puzzles all the time (I work at a newspaper, and sometimes, quite frankly, there's not much else to do...), I have a rudimentary understanding of spelling and how to make words. It's just that by the time the game gets back around to you, you've already gone to the restroom, let the cat out, vacuumed the stairs, gotten a Coke, watched "The Simpsons", and it's still not your turn yet.
Played a version at my in-laws house that's much more fun, because everybody's playing at once. Here's how it works:
* You use the conventional Scrabble tiles, so you don't need anything special to do it put them all face down in the middle of the table.
* Every player takes 7 tiles, just like in regular Scrabble.
* Throw the board away; you're not going to be using it.
* All of the players turn their tiles over at once.
* Each player is making his/her own individual Scrabble game right in front of them....you try to use all seven letters in one or two or three words that are all connected.
* The first player to use all seven tiles says "GO!", and every player needs to grab another letter to add to their game. If you were still working on your first seven, too bad; now you've got to deal with eight.
* The first player to have used all eight says "GO!", and now everyone needs to grab ANOTHER one. This keeps going until all of the tiles are drawn, and someone wins. It's not the number of points you've used--don't worry about that. It's using all of the tiles you've got.
Some additional rules:
1. You can break apart your own puzzle and rearrange it as many times as you need. Nothing's set in stone. Do whatever you need to to make all of your letters fit.
2. The letter "Q" is really a "QU"....you don't need to have the "U" to use the "Q". So the word "QUIT" you could spell "QIT" and that works.
At my in-laws house (evidently the site of much holiday mayhem this year), we combined two Scrabble sets and had 8 people playing at once. It was a lot of fun, and if you've become complacent in your Scrabble playing, I'd suggest giving Speed Scrabble a chance. If you've got teenagers who don't want to play Scrabble because it's boring, get them in on it, too! We loved it. The more players you have, the more challenging it is, so invite everyone over and tell them to bring their own Scrabble boards. It's a blast.
