“Sapient? What kind of a word is Sapient? There is no such word as Sapient, you made that up.” That is a typical sentence you may hear or catch yourself saying when you play the game of Scrabble. Of course you could replace the word Sapient with any other word that is not widely used. Of course a wise Scrabble player would be able to say, “Oh yes it is. It is rite here on page 175 of my spelling dictionary, na na na na na! That will be a triple word score for me; and I am leaving you in the dust.”
How To Play
Well now if I have your attention I will explain to you how the game goes. You can have from to 2 to 4 players. Each player picks up 7 tiles which are placed upside down on the box lid so that you don’t know what letters you are picking (at least that is how we did it. I did notice on the picture here at Epinions of the game that it looks like it comes with some kind of holder for the tiles my game is over 20 years old so I don’t have one of those.) You then place your letters on one of the 4 holders that is provided. This is a nice thing to have because it allows you to look at your letters, but helps to prevent others from seeing them.
The person who is the lucky one (maybe, maybe not) to go first must spell a word using his/her 7 tiles. Each tile has a point value on it. And every time you spell a word you add the numbers together to get your score for that round. The next person must build a word off of the first persons word using their 7 tiles and points are counted up the same for that person and so on. For each tile you use you pick back up that many more. When all the tiles are gone or no more words can possibly be made the game is over. You count up your points and the one with the highest points wins.
Of course there are a few twists along the way. Located on the game board are a few squares that say things like: double letter score, triple letter score, double word score or triple word score. If you are lucky enough to spell a word over any of these spaces the letter on the letter is double or triples and if you land on a word space your entire word value is doubled or tripled. Another player can challenge your words if they don’t think a word is spelled correctly or if they don’t believe you are using a real word. If they are wrong they lose their turn.
Quality and Value
I have personally owned the game I have since I was about 10 so it has lasted about 24 years and it still looks great. I don’t know if they still make the game with similar quality. I do know however, that the price of the game is extremely reasonable. I picked one up for a friend it cost me just $9.99. Compared to the price of most of the newer adult or family games that is fantastic.
Cons
Honestly I can’t really think of any. I would say if you are not in the mood to engage your brain than you might not want to play this game. Other than that I have no complaints
This game will no doubt help you to learn a few new words. It will definitely engage your brain and your competitive spirit. It may even cause you to have a little spat with another play. But don’t worry as long as the dictionary is near by you should be ok.
Depending on the players this game can be a long one. I would suggest you give yourself at least a couple of hours to play if you plan on playing. Now I bet you are wondering what Sapient means. Well maybe if you leave me a comment and ask me real nicely I’ll tell you. Cheap attempt to get comments but, I’ll see if it works.
