That is the question I ask myself every time I play this game with my husband. He has never been a good speller and yet he wins the game every time. One of these days I will figure out how he does it.
I really enjoy playing Scrabble, even though I lose on a regular basis. The game is fun and challenging.
Players pick 7 alphabet tiles to start the game. The first player uses their tiles to create a word to start the game. This word should be placed on the star in the center of the gameboard. It doesn't matter which direction you go or where you put the first letter, as long as one of the letters are on the star.
Players then alternate turns building off of the first word and all subsequent words. The idea is to use the high point value letters, like the Q and Z and form long words. It is also very helpful if you land on some of the extra point spaces, like the "triple word score" or "double letter score". My husband seems to get the "triple word score" every time. Do you think maybe he is cheating when I am concentrating on my next move? NAH, he would never do that, would he? Hmmm!
After your turn you pick up as many tiles as you used, so that you always have 7 tiles on your stand. If you are lucky enough to use all 7 of your letters at once you get extra points. This is hard to do, I think I have done it only once.
The first player to get rid of all of their tiles wins, provided they have the highest score. If you still have tiles left over at the end you add up their point values and the player that went out first gets those points added to their score, and you get them subtracted from your score.
We have had our Scrabble game for several years. The game comes with alphabet tiles and a game board. We keep the tiles in an old bag with a drawstring on it which helps keep the tiles hidden from other players, so they can't cheat and pick their own letters. Before we had this bag it was a pain to have to turn all the tiles upside down and keep them that way. This takes up less space and is easy to reach in and grab the tiles you need.
It seems like this would be an easy and fun game but it is actually quite challenging and can be aggravating. We used to play with my husbands grandma quite a bit. Now, before you go and feel sorry for Grandma (she is after all 80 years old and maybe we should cut her some slack), you have to realize that Grandma is a cut throat at games. She holds nothing back, sharp as a whip, she is really great at games. But at Scrabble she will try anything to get a word on the board. She makes up words and when that doesn't work she gives the "well it is a crossword word" excuse. We had to go out and buy a brand new dictionary that we insist is on the table if Grandma plays. She is a riot to play with because she comes up with some great words and always has a "definition" of what these made up words mean.
Scrabble is a great game to play. It is great for kids who can read and spell also. It helps them practice their spelling and thinking skills.
I really enjoy playing Scrabble and one of these days I am going to beat my husband at this game. Come on...help me think of some good words that start with the Q, preferrably ones that don't need the U with them since I never have the Q and the U together.
