mmcphee's Full Review: Milton Bradley Scrabble Brand Crossword Game - the...
My husband and I are Scrabble addicts. We play several games a week after the kids are in bed. In fact when traveling we used to go into Scrabble withdrawal. At some point we got smart and purchased a travel version of our favorite game, the Folio Edition Scrabble Crossword Game.
The Basics
The small zippered canvas folio holds the attached board, 4 tiles racks and a pouch for the 100 lettered tiles. This is a miniaturized version of Deluxe Scrabble still recommended for 2-4 players ages 8 and up.
What Makes This Scrabble So Special
Travel versions of games have been made for years and often they pale in comparison to their full sized predecessors. Other than size and features designed specifically for travel this is the same game you spread out on your coffee table.
To make travel easier the tiles snap into the board and on your rack. The folio also offers a place to store a pen or pencil and the score card. And if you are playing on the beach and rain comes down slip your letter trays under the board, fold it up and everything stays right where it is supposed to so you can continue the game right where you left off.
What is Scrabble Anyway?
Scrabble is a classic word game that you are probably familiar with and hopefully doesnt need much explanation. Place your tiles on the board to make words. Any new word must use at least one letter already on the board. Each letter has a point value. Your score is the total number of points placed during your turn. The board has a number of bonus squares to allow you to increase your score. The person with the highest score wins. For a more in depth discussion of play please see my review of the original Scrabble board game.
On the Road Again
When all zipped up, travel Scrabble takes up only about 10" X 6" of precious luggage space. I would leave an extra pair of shoes home to make sure I had room for Scrabble. It is a nice quiet diversion when the kids are in bed on vacation but my husband and I aren't quite ready to retire. I don't feel cheated when playing this version as though I am missing something from home. I wouldn't recommend this version for regular play as it is rather small, but it certainly works away from home. Players who are visually challenged may need their reading glasses to see the smaller letters and point values or an arm stretching machine.
The game is not without its problems. The folding board doesn't always sit flat and if you don't press the tiles in firmly enough they can pop back out at you. You also need to put in some effort to get the tiles back out when the game is done. While having the tiles snap into the trays is nice, if you like to slide the tiles around to help you see a word you need to rest them on the rack as opposed to snapping them into the rack. Also the racks are just long enough for your seven letters there is no extra room.
Final Thoughts
Although it will never replace any of our full sized Scrabble games, Folio Edition Scrabble is a great choice for Scrabble fans on the go.
