disinclined's Full Review: Milton Bradley Scrabble Brand Crossword Game - the...
I love Scrabble. I love it so much that I need to be close to Scrabble at all times. Now, most of my day is spent near a computer, either at home or at work, and this means I can feed my addiction with Scrabulous, like everyone else on the planet. But there are, sadly, still a few moments in life that I cannot have a Scrabulous game at my fingertips, and it is for times like those that the Scrabble Travel Folio was invented.
I'd been lusting after this set for a while before I finally got it (with a gift card, though this set typically sells for about $15). I would visit it at the store, admiring its clever design and compact size, and trying to rationalize buying it. Finally, I realized that there was no need to try to justify it with some sort of upcoming trip or whatever travel, schmavel, I was just going to make it mine.
Everything about this wee little set is cunningly designed to be as space-efficient and cute as possible. Inside the zipped nylon case (which is about the size of a hardcover book), you'll see the hinged game board, which splits in half to close and has a secure plastic catch to keep it shut. The case has an inner pocket for the provided scorepad and rule sheet, and a little loop for a pen/pencil (also included). A small cloth drawstring bag contains the tiles and just goes under the game board, to sit loose inside the nylon case. The four tile racks are numbered and their covers snap shut, so you can keep your tiles secret if you pause mid-game you just snap the cover closed and put your rack in the corresponding numbered slot.
The board itself looks a little different from the traditional Scrabble board. Mine has a kind of autumnal color schemes instead of the colored tiles being pink, red, light blue and dark blue, they are pastel orange, pumpkin, light blue, and teal. It's an attractive color scheme, though I'm not sure why they changed it (and the red pencil clashes with it they went to the trouble of printing "Scrabble" on the pencil, but couldn't make it match? Even a generic yellow pencil would've looked better with the board).
The tiles are pretty teeny, about the size of a Chiclet but square, and they snap into the plastic grid of the board so that you can stop mid-game and pack it up to take it with you. It does make it a pain to remove the tiles after the game, and I imagine if you were playing this in a car or plane, you'd have to be really vigilant during post-game cleanup about not letting any tiles pop off and go flying under your seat, never to be seen again.
The board isn't much bigger than, say, a square dinner plate, and the tiles and printing are all very small and somewhat hard to see. So this isn't a board that you would want to use for normal play at home, if you had a full-size board handy. But if you've got a long, monotonous road trip planned or need to distract yourself from the miseries of a lengthy flight, this is a clever and highly portable way to take Scrabble with you wherever you may roam.
