Pros: somewhat effective, no CFCs, spray from any angle, easy application
Cons: not recyclable contain in some communities, sickly overpowering scent, contributes to indoor air pollution
When we bought this house last year, we already knew before we moved in that we would be renovating both bathrooms. One has a tub with older formica panels for the shower surround and the other has a fiberglass shower stall. When we moved in it was obvious both had built-up dirt, grim and soap deposits that needed to be cleaned off before we could use either.
What I wanted: I will be honest and say that we use as few harsh chemical cleaning agents in our home as possible. Most cleaning is done with vinegar, baking soda, ammonia, soap and magic erasers to keep the indoor air from being polluted. This was one exception where I wanted something that would cut through the build-up as quickly as possible and with as little effort as possible.
What I bought: I bought Scrubbing Bubbles Bathroom Cleaner (Fresh Clean Scent),25 oz (1 lb 9 oz), 708 g aerosol.
Why I bought: I bought this product partially because of television advertising and I've been satisfied with other products made by the makers S.C Johnson & Son, Inc. I was really looking for a quick, easy solution to my problem so I could get on with unpacking.
The Product: The cleaner is in an aerosol (CFC free) metal container. The bulk of the container is a bright lime green with the same colour plastic lid. On the front is a two tone red banner with yellow font that says "new formula!" and white font below that says "Antibacterial". There is a large "scrubbing bubble" character surrounded partially with small bubbles in tones of blue and white. The bubble character is a pale bluish white dome shape with slightly fluted bottom edge where bright tow tone orange bristles are. has big blue and black eyes, eyebrows and similated sparkles on the front that hints of bubbles cleaning to a nice sparkle. The name "Scrubbing Bubbles" is in bold black font with smaller black front saying "bathroom cleaner" on a white both just under the blue bubbles and bubble character. Surrounding the bubbles starting to the left of the bubble character then following around under the name is a royal blue "C" shape banner, narrow on both ends, narrowing to a point on the left and wider at the bottom. At the bottom of the canister is a royal blue tapered banner with the name of the makers in small white font. The scent is in black font on the lime green background while "Powerful Foam Dissolves Soap Scum is in white font outlined with darker green. The weight is in green font outlined in lime green on a darker green large "c" banner. To the side in smaller green front is the caution.
The back is divided into section with the top section showing three scrubbling bubble characters cleaning a bathtub. Most of the font is in small dark blue font. The writing is divided into: cleans, sanitizes, deodorizes, directions for use, storage & disposal, precautionary statements, first aid, and physical or chemical hazards in small white font on a royal blue background. A logo in royal blue with white lettering states there are no cfs. A small rectangle with an inverted spray can on a royal blue background is about mid way down the back label. Beside it in small red font is"works from any angle".
Overall, the packaging is designed to catch your eye with the use of bright, primary colours. The scrubbing bubble characters are cutsey while conveying the message that this product works effortlessly to clean in the bathroom.

Performance: I used the small bathroom shower stall as the test for this product. After shaking the product well, I applied as per the instructions then let sit for several minutes before wiping with a wet cloth. The product was easy to apply but the bubbles weren't all that being a lot less than expected. There certainly were not any scrubbing bubble characters popping out (tongue in cheek). The most notable, right off the bat problem with this bathroom cleaner is the sickly, overpowering, nauseating scent. Honestly, if that is what the makers think is "fresh scent" they definitely have olfactory problems! However, it was the performance I was disappointed in. The first application barely put a dent in the dirt so I did another one. It took four applications to get the shower stall shiny. Now I did say there was a build-up but this product simply did not deliver as promised. It did not cut through the grim quickly and the only thing powerful was the scent. Based on that performance I did not even bother trying to clean the tub and surround in the larger bathroom with this product.
Ok, I admit I was wrong buying this product. I bought into the hype and quickly learned that it was a waste of money. I'm sorry but I seriously expected more from this product in terms of performance. Having to repeat the application twice I would have expected but four times. The shower stall was definitely not that bad! I also did not expect such and overpowering scent. The only way I would tentatively recommend this product and even then there are likely other products that would give better performance is if there is a heavy build-up and you want clean multiple times. In hindsight, I should have stuck with more natural cleaners, bit the bullet and used elbow grease! I definitely would not using this product in areas without good ventilation. For regular, normal cleaning this product would be, IMO, serious overkill. The smell lingers as well so polluting the indoor air would be a concern.
