Cleaned everything in my house - 4th Update 10/10/09
Written: Jan 06 '06 (Updated Oct 11 '09)
I asked for this for Christmas. Does everything I wanted including: cleaning linoleum, carpet, toilet, shower, sink, microwave, stove, range, toaster, countertop, cabinets, refrigerator, & removing wallpaper. I'm sure I'll use it later for the grill, pillows, bed, & possibly steaming a shirt (doubtful) but I'll save that for later. I busted it out right after Christmas & began on the kitchen. It takes about 5 minutes to get steam. You can cheat if you put warm water in it or microwave 10-11 ounces in the microwave for 60 seconds in the included measuring cup. The fill-up funnel works surprisingly well, just pour slowly over 10-15 seconds. I figured the steam would be either on or off only. It's not. There's a pressure-sensitive button which is nice to not waste the steam on less intensive cleaning. I highly recommend connecting the hose to it with the nozzle that will connect different attachments as well. I'm not sure why anyone would just connect the nozzle directly to the steamer as this would make cleaning difficult. COUNTERTOP: I found it easiest to hook up the hose immediately with a nylon brush attachment for some scrubbing. It took off everything on our countertop. My brother makes Sugar-Free Kool-Aid every 2-3 days & you'd be amazed that when ripping open those packets the red powder you CAN'T see goes EVERYWHERE. Keep LOTS of hand towels or a 10-pack of $2 white rags handy. Trust me. You need to wipe fairly often to make sure you get grease off while it's melted from the steam on your range hood or stove. SINK: I then tackled around the sink & it got out all that grime around the edge & behind the faucet. Frankly, I was impressed. I've used 20 times now with perfection. MICROWAVE: The microwave was next and is now like new & free of odors & didn't require chemicals. It blasted out the corners much better than using a Mr. Clean Sponge (which are great). TOASTER & RANGE: The toaster is by the stove, so it gets grease on the side and it now looks like new again. Same goes for the hooded range & fan. It melts the grease. STOVE: Our stove has a leak in the door gasket, so smoke comes out occasionally at the top of the door which blackens the front edge. This took out all the burnt on blackness! I tried it a little bit on the glass & it worked, but not as well. I think it needs a little bit more elbow grease or possibly just holding the tip of steam on it awhile instead of the nylon brush. (will update on next review) REFRIGERATOR: The frig is now sanitized as well as the top, handles, the in-the-door ice & water tray, the seals, shelves, etc. CABINETS: I then tackled the kitchen cabinets & you wouldn't believe how much grime there is where you commonly open them around the handles. It was nasty, but that's all gone now. Works great around the rest of your door handles around the house too for smudges (Mr. Clean Sponges work great too for this). LINOLEUM: The kitchen linoleum floor took about an hour though & it's only 4x8 feet. Of course, it has little dimples & grooves in the pattern, so I had to scrub each square, but I eventually saw that instead of the grooves being black they're supposed to be green and tan! Well worth it & now I'll rewax since we bought the house 3 years ago. This did take 2 full 11 oz. fill-ups to clean all the floor, but not much effort. I find that it's best to steam a section & then wipe. Then move onto the next section. It makes the steam certainly last 30 minutes since you're not CONSTANTLY steaming. I noticed if you run it constantly it can't keep up after awhile anyways. Best to use it for 10-20 seconds then wipe. Give it 5 seconds & repeat. BATHROOM SINK & MIRROR: Usually I use a lot of elbow grease with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser sponge to clean the shower grout, sink, tile, etc. This is even better than using the sponge which really does work by the way. The glass attachment amazingly DOES work. Just wipe off the steam with a paper towel & it dries to a streak-free shine. SHOWER GROUT, DOOR, & FLOOR: Jan 18, 2006 I FINALLY tackled the rest of the shower. I'd used 2 full steamers to clean 2/3 of the grout so far & of course it gets worse the farther down you go. It turned ALL of the tile & grout to like-new condition. The shower door no longer has rust in the corners too. The worst part of it though was cleaning the textured surface on the shower floor. It had "blackness" into every little groove in a white shower floor. I used 2 full steamers on a 6 square foot area in about 25 minutes with the brushes & most of the blackness was gone. I then just used the concentrated tip and it was taking out the grime even better, but it would've taken several hours to make the shower like new. I sprayed some cheap 99 cent cleaner all over the shower floor though, let it sit, then decided to steam with the brush. It was AMAZING! It foamed up the cleaner & basically SUPER-CHARGED it. My shower is now like BRAND NEW. I'd tried before to use a Mr. Clean Sponge on it, but it usually rips it to shreds since it's like rubbing sandpaper on sandpaper. TOILET: Worked great around the toilet too with plenty of paper towels. I took a silver Sharpie to label one scrubber attachment as "toilet" & attempted to clean the inside. It didn't work very well I'd say. I used some toilet cleaner & tried the same method of super-charging the cleaning power with steam, but it didn't really work. CARPET: I've since used this on the carpet on all the little dark spots that just don't seem to come out. I have terrible allergies & I use our carpet cleaner/steamer 4 times yearly. It's best to use some Resolve spray-on carpet cleaner, wait the 3 minutes then steam & massage the cleaner into the spots until I'd get a white & slightly foamy result. The stain will disappear and just "blot" as Resolve instructs...more like "rub vigorously" with 3 dry hand towels over about 20 dime-sized spots in high-traffic areas. I waited an hour for it to dry & vacuumed. Carpet looks good as NEW & some spots had been there almost since installation 9/2003. WALLPAPER REMOVAL:We put new paint & tile in our bathrooms 6/2007 and there was a wallpaper border that I removed with this. My parents removed wallpaper the weekend before me by using a sponge to soak the border, but they said it took a lot of time making it come off. I did this too and the wallpaper still was just ripping off in small pieces that tore. Plus, there was the backing still on the wall as well as glue behind that. I remembered the steamer and started shooting steam without the tip and it virtually melted the glue. It was best to wipe & rinse with a wet sponge often to get the glue off the wall. The best technique was to use the nylon brush attachment and steam full blast and rub in small circles over the wallpaper and heat up the glue behind it. The wallpaper would just peal off, but the backing would remain. Then you'd have to do it again and the backing would peel off kind of like wet notebook paper stuck to a wall. The glue took the same technique and a lot of rinsing the sponge, but eventually I was down to the wall only. It still saved me a ton of effort and time. Update 10/10/09: I had my bathroom in the basement with 50 square feet of ugly wallpaper that I dreaded removing for 6 years, but finally did it with the help of the Scunci steamer. The trick was to rip off the paper, steam the backing and scrape off. Then wet with fabric softener on a sponge for a minute and scrape as much glue off as possible. Then use the steamer for the remaining glue in small areas. Worked like a charm.
I was kinda iffy on whether or not this thing would work since I saw it sold on TV & saw there's multiple brands. Plus, I read many reviews too and it seems 50/50 whether it works, but it truly does in my opinion.
