I put off buying one of these units after reading dismal reviews from other users on typical product review sites. I received one of these this past Christmas (2006) and was hopefully optimistic about it's performance. When a new kitten (not litter trained) came into our life not long after Christmas as well as the ever present 5 year old boy and six year old girl, its true value finally appeared.
I have used this unit to deodorize, sanitize, and remove where the kitten secretly hid its "business", got up ground in and dried up playdoh, got up melted candle wax from where the 5 year old knocked over a non-dripless candle onto the carpet- and I have to admit, the berry scent came up again with the removal of the wax, got up glitter glue the 6 year old girl spilled under the dining room table and onto the carpet and then kicked around to make an op-art pattern- this was tough and took some effort (it was GLUE) but it did come up without the use of chemicals and just the steam and some scrubbing with a towel, i never tried to used the brush attachment, got up paint on the carpet that one of my GF's friends walked into the house and left 2 nice big shoeprints, cleaning the outdoor gas grill, the bathroom sink and toilet, I could go on and on but I think you get the general idea.
Our type of carpet may be different from yours and a lot of things will be different, but as an overview, this product spells quick fix for everything I've tried it on. But, believe me, with 2 devil kids, 3 indoor cats and 10 outdoor cats, I will be putting this product through its paces and will constantly be updating this article, if for nothing else other than finding out what it WON'T clean.
Others complained that their product didn't clean anything or that it took too much effort with its steamer assisting. Put a little elbow grease behind your product and you have a winner. Not everything works with the wave of a magic wand. This unit isn't going to vacuum up what it fixes. You're still going to need to put forth a little effort for the final touches. After fixing up all the mishaps that I taken care of over the past 2 months I still run a vacuum over the areajust to pick up any steam or watery residue.
I love my steamer and my only regret is that I didn't get one sooner. For grease, the steam will have a slightly hard time, but then again even my washing machine and detergent doesn't get all the grease out of some of my work clothing. If you could add some kerosene or some other cutter to the resevoir it would do a better job like a professional steam cleaner, but as a quick fix you can't go wrong with this unit.
