Pros:Low cost desktop back-up and storage expansion backed by Seagate support.
Cons:Requires an electrical outlet in addition to a USB port, no pre-loaded back-up software.
The Bottom Line: If you have money to burn, or need a portable drive, get the FreeAgent Go. If you want to back-up your desktop for a reasonable price, consider the FreeAgent Desk.
I'm completely sold on the FreeAgent Go (see my separate review for details). The Desk model doesn't have all of the features that make the Free Agent Go such a great product, but it is a good way to back up the critical files on your desktop computer for a reasonable price.

Unlike the FreeAgent Go, the FreeAgent Desk requires an electrical outlet as well as a USB port. This isn't a big deal if you purchase it to back up your desktop computer, since you probably already have a surge protector with multiple outlets for your computer, printer, etc. But, be aware that the FreeAgent Desk model needs space for a transformer, not just a regular plug.
I was initially disappointed to discover that the FreeAgent Desk model doesn't come with the convenient back-up software that is pre-loaded on the FreeAgent Go. However, the very helpful support staff at Seagate walked me through the process of downloading the free software from their website. I still have a few glitches that make the Desk model somewhat less convenient than the Go. If my computer is turned off at the time a back-up is scheduled, I have to start the back-up manually. The color of the Seagate icon on the taskbar alerts you to the fact that a back-up is overdue, though, and starting the process just takes a few clicks of the mouse, so this isn't an especially complicated or onerous process.
The FreeAgent Desk model comes in a variety of storage sizes (currently up to 2TB) to suit the needs of most computer users.
Overall, I find the FreeAgent Go to be a more convenient back-up and storage solution, but the considerably lower price of the FreeAgent Desk (there is a price difference of about $40 for the 500MB models) makes it an effective, lower-cost solution for desktop expansion and back-up.
