Bubble mailers. A very cool concept that saves you money when shipping, can be used over and over again and gets your items there in one piece. There are a lot of different bubble mailers on the market; those that have a plastic film to them for added protection from the elements, ones with an adhesive flap, oversized for large items and then there are the basics like this one. The five inch by ten inch size might not be the best pick for some people but for the shop, they are a great way to send out body jewelry and have flyers and catalogs included - this helps us save on shipping since we dont have mail things separately and weve yet to have anyone say that their items have arrived damaged. The key to picking out a solid mailer is to give it the twist test. Pick it up, twist it around a few times and see if any of the outer liner rips or tears. If it does, skip it and go with a different brand. If it cant stand up to the twist test, chances are it wont be able to hold up when tossed in with other mail, sorted on conveyer belts and packed on trucks.
Sealed JiffyLite Kraft Bubble Mailer, Self-Seal Closure, 5 x 10
The bubble lined mailers are truly one of the modern marvels of the office supply world. They offer you superior protection, a light weight design and a self sealing adhesive flap. You can purchase these with or without the lined address area on the front so if you are someone that uses address labels exclusively, you wont have to worry about having to cover up the area. Since the 5 x 10 shape is a little strange and wont accommodate a lot of things, you will want to make sure that you actually have a need for this size padded mailer before you invest in a large quantity of them. They are sold individually but you get the best price when you buy them in larger quantities. I use these for sending out smaller books, floppy discs, CDs packaged in soft plastic or slim jewel cases and stuff for the shop.
The press and seal closure is a nice feature but that doesnt mean that you wont need tape. If you are going to fold the edge over more than the creased area you will need to tape it to secure it. Likewise, you may notice a small gap on the edges so adding a little bit of tape will ensure that your item arrives at its destination in one piece. The thickness of the bubble area is about an eighth of an inch which might not sound like a lot but it is. Ive never had anyone complain that items have arrived damaged or broken so they do work to add a nice layer of protection. Since this is only five inches wide I wouldnt suggest mailing anything that contains a liquid [like paint or perfume] because you arent going to be able to add much of a wrapping around the bottle. You can find these at places like Wal-Mart and Target or at just about any office supply store in the mailing section. There are tons of different uses for these when it comes to mailing things out, sometimes I use these as an inner packing for larger bubble mailers when I need to fill up some dead space or to keep things from moving around.
You can use these over and over to get the most from them. If you use address labels instead of writing directly on the pack you can simply apply another label over the original, use some packing or carton tape over it to secure it in place then mail it out as usual. Because this has a self adhesive strip to close it, once that is used you will need to tape the end shut, avoid using staples since these could snag other pieces of mail. The outer paper on the mailer is made from 100% recycled material and the inner bubble pack is made from 10% post consumer material. So by using these over and over you are not only saving money but you are also helping the environment by purchasing things that are made from recycled materials. If it gets too beat up to use for mailing things you can cut the pack up and use it to pad things that get mailed out in boxes.
Things To Know
• Using these types of mailers can save you a lot of money on postage. Because they have a bubble liner instead of shredded paper, they cost less to mail without having to worry that the contents are going to be damaged.
• If this isnt the best size for your needs, there are others sizes available from 4 x 8 to 12.5 x 20. At one point in time they did offer an economy pack that had assorted sizes in it but I havent seen these in a while so they may be discontinued.
The Bottom Line
Regardless of whether you go with this size or another, these padded mailers are strong, light weight and can be used over and over again. You can purchase them individually for about .59 cents a piece or by the box for about .43 cents a piece [this is a bulk purchase type of deal so only buy them if you think you will actually have a use for them]. So far Ive had very good luck with these and use them when ever I have something that I want to protect while in transit. Even after theyve been shipped back and forth a few times, you can still use them inside boxes or for extra padding for delicate shipments. About the only downside to these is that they are not waterproof, no mailer is completely waterproof but they do have ones that have a protective film around them to keep rain and snow from water logging it. Even so, they are a great pick for mailing out smaller or odd shaped items!
As always, thanks for the read!
