| shantel575's Full Review: Sealy Backsaver Mattress |
Mattress shopping does not fall into my area of “expertise”! Up until 2 years ago, I had been sleeping on a waterbed for many years. I got a Queen Size waterbed as a Christmas gift from my parents when I was in 6th grade. And I’ve been sleeping on it ever since. As a matter of fact, I got so accustomed to sleeping on it, that I had a difficult time sleeping on a regular bed or mattress. I even brought my waterbed with me when I married and moved away from home. My husband then got used to sleeping on it. He slept on it for 4 years before we gave it up. Upon buying a brand new master bedroom suite, we decided it was time to sell the ‘ole waterbed and start mattress shopping. We did our homework, shopped around and we feel like we got the best mattress for our needs and likes.
What We Were Looking For
We knew the transition from a waterbed to a regular mattress bed would not be easy! This helped us determine our criteria for a new bed though. First of all, we knew we wanted something “soft” or “plushy”. We did not want anything that was firm or hard after sleeping on water for so many years! We also wanted quality. Mattresses are expensive, so we wanted to invest wisely and get a good set that would last us a lifetime. My husband has back and neck trouble, so we knew we needed to keep this in mind when selecting a mattress. Once we started shopping and “testing” mattresses, we decided that a “pillow top” was a likely option for us (more about “pillow tops” later).
We shopped at several mattress stores and outlets, and we ended up making our selection and our purchase at the Sealy mattress store. The salesmen were knowledgeable, friendly and super helpful. We were quite impressed with the overall experience there.
The Mattress Set
We selected a Queen size set for our new bedroom suite. The specific mattress we chose is the Sealy BackSaver mattress. The mattress and box spring set is rather “hefty” in size compared to any other mattresses I’ve seen or slept on! They are the standard Queen size (60” by 80”) in that respect, but the thickness is amazing. The box spring is 9 inches thick/tall and the top mattress is over 10 inches thick/tall. Combined, it’s around 20 inches thick/tall! I don’t think they will be sagging anytime soon.
The covering on our set is a quilted pattern and the fabric covering is white. The covering is made of wool and a blend of high quality fibers.
We selected the “pillow top” version of the BackSaver mattress. If you are not familiar with a pillow top, then let me explain. Regular mattresses can be either firm or plush (hard or soft). A pillow top is a firmer mattress but it has a pillow type covering on it to make it seem plush or soft. The pillow top covering is about an inch or so in thickness and is very soft and springy. It adds much comfort to the mattress!
Features of the BackSaver Mattress Set
Sealy is a very reputable manufacturer in the mattress business, and rightfully so. They build their products to the highest standard and they use quality materials and methods of assembly.
The BackSaver mattress features their PermaGrid® Foundation, which is the design of the coil system inside the mattress. The PermaGrid® Foundation is a unique feature and here is what Sealy’s website has to say about it:
“ An interlocking, high carbon steel grid top provides a strong, durable foundation and ensures even weight distribution. Each element is permanently locked to the grid top delivering a quiet, yet sturdy foundation.”
This mattress set also features Sealy’s DuroLife® Coils, which “provide maximum support with a comfortable feel”.
As I also mentioned, this set has the pillow top feature. This feature allows for extra comfort while still providing support. Speaking of the pillow top feature, the mattress is DOUBLE sided! The pillow top cover is on BOTH sides of the mattress! This is a special feature on all Sealy mattresses to help prolong the life of their products since they promote flipping and rotating mattresses. Who wants to buy a pillow top mattress and only have the pillow top cover on one side? If that were the case, you couldn’t ever flip it over and sleep on it!
We also opted to purchase Sealy’s “Stain Safe” to help maintain the cleanness of our mattress set. The “Stain Safe” is a coating put on the mattress by the manufacturer and it is almost like a “barrier” between the mattress and stains. If anything ever gets on a mattress that has been treated with “Stain Safe”, it should come right off with a damp cloth (never use chemicals on your mattress!). Sealy’s guarantee is that if anything stains our mattress and we cannot remove it, then they will replace our mattress free of charge! This is a pretty good guarantee! The “Stain Safe” treatment only cost us $38, which isn’t bad if you consider the benefits of it should we ever have a non-removable stain.
Taking Care Of The BackSaver Mattress Set
Care for this set is quite simple. Since we have the “Stain Safe” protection, we don’t have much worry there, but we do have to rotate and flip the mattress to maintain the shape and comfort of it. Sealy recommends flipping and rotating the top mattress every 2 weeks for the first 6 weeks of ownership. After the initial 6 weeks, they recommend flipping the mattress every 2 months from then on, for the life of the mattress. Rotating and flipping your mattress is the single, most important thing that you can do to prolong the life and comfort of your mattress. This is very important!
The mattress comes with handles on the sides to help make flipping and rotating a bit easier!
How We Like The BackSaver Mattress Set
When our new mattresses arrived, we were very excited and couldn’t wait to try them out! We fully expected to not sleep well for the first few nights since we were transitioning from a waterbed (zero support) to a regular, somewhat firm, mattress. We were stunned! We slept like babies the first night we used them, and have done so ever since. We had no problems transitioning from the waterbed, and that was a great thing for us. The pillow top feature is fantastic and very, very comfortable. We were worried that the pillow top cover would “flatten” out over time since it is pillow like and thick, but we’ve been sleeping on it for 2 years and so far, it’s still fluffy and soft!
Since sleeping on this mattress, my husband has had fewer problems with his back and neck. The BackSaver has given us the support we need to sleep “healthy” and that is something we didn’t have with the waterbed. Even though we now have the support we need, the bed is super comfortable due to the pillow top feature. I can’t say enough about the pillow top! It’s fantastic!
Not only is the mattress set comfortable and supportive, it’s also quiet. When moving around on this mattress, it doesn’t make a lot of noise and it doesn’t seem to be very disturbing to the other person. The coil system is designed to help the mattress evenly distribute weight, so I’m sure this is part of the reason it is so quiet and non-disturbing when someone is moving or turning over. This is a far cry from the waterbed, let me tell you!
