Pros: Strong construction; Firm, yet soft; Easy to clean
Cons: Not the ultimate mattress, but close enough
Having two little girls in the house has brought about many changes in lifestyle and spending habits. I find myself doing things I never did in the past and purchasing things I never would have considered before. In the girls bedrooms, new cribs have become part of the decor and with new cribs come the need for new mattresses. My choice for sleeping comfort was the Sealy Supreme Sleep Baby Mattress, a product manufactured by one of the best known names in mattresses.
Facts About This Product:
This baby mattress is designed to fit a standard size crib. The mattress measures about 52 inches (132 cm) in length, 27.5 inches (70 cm) in width, and 6 inches (15 cm) in height/thickness. The mattress itself is an off- white color with a slick, triple laminated cover. This covering also features a vinyl binding that is resistant to mildew, stains, tearing, and odors.
On the inside of the Sealy Supreme Sleep Baby Mattress are 204 heat- tempered, innerspring coils for maximum support. There is a steel border that helps to keep the sides and corners firm so that the mattress maintains its rectangular shape. Vertical steel bars help distribute your babys weight and there are several layers of non- allergenic foam for maximum comfort.
Customer Service/Product Info:
More facts about Sealy products can be found at the company web site, sealy.com. However, there is very little info about the baby mattresses in this site. If you have a specific question that needs answered, you will need to call the customer support line, 800-MYSEALY, between the hours of 9am and 4:30pm, Monday through Friday, Eastern Time.
Sealy is one of several different manufacturers that makes mattresses and it is the one brand that I have owned and slept on more than any other. My present bed contains a Sealy Posturepedic mattress and, while it is slowly wearing itself out, it has still served me well over the years. Since I have had good experiences with the Sealy name, I felt it was a good idea to continue trusting this brand by purchasing a mattress with the Sealy label for one of my little girls.
Being new to the baby mattress scene, I wasnt sure exactly what to look for in a baby mattress so I went to work researching the subject and finding a mattress that had what I wanted for a good price. I didnt want a mattress that was too soft (many of the ones I checked were too flimsy) or too firm. I finally decided on the Sealy Supreme Sleep because upon initial examination, it had the qualities I wanted and it was priced under $100.
When I purchased this Sealy mattress, one of the things I liked was the fact that it contains 204 interlocking steel coils and a steel border for strength. Examining the mattress first- hand confirms that this is, indeed, a strong, firm mattress. The added support from the internal framework makes a big difference in durability. Even though I have only been using the mattress for a short time, I can already tell it will last a long time. Other mattresses lack the steel border and they can be easily pushed in different directions, leading to early breakdown. But Sealy Supreme Sleep doesnt budge. However, I must admit that this added strength made me a little concerned at first. Firm mattresses are great for adults, but does a tiny little girl really need such a strong, firm foundation on which to sleep? Maybe this mattress is a little too firm?
Well, after several months of usage, the verdict is out and Sealy Supreme Sleep has come through with good results. It isnt like sleeping on a wooden board, like I first feared. The mattress does have enough give to make for a pleasant nights sleep. I keep this mattress covered with an additional layer of padding, just to be safe and sure. But there is really no need for this. The mattress can easily stand on its own. It is solid and sturdy yet soft enough that your baby will fall asleep in an instant and wake up refreshed (ok, as refreshed as a baby can be).
One other thing I like about this mattress is its slick covering. Most crib mattresses have a similar covering but Sealy Supreme Sleep has a thicker layer than most others. Checking the fact sheet, there are three layers that comprise the outer cover and they are resistant to dampness. This mattress covering doesnt allow any liquid to soak through, making it easy to clean and long- lasting. My little girls have, of course, had many accidents in the crib but there are no worries with the Sealy Supreme Sleep Mattress. The outside of the mattress wipes clean with a damp cloth. It is impenetrable, and that means there is no smell or mess. Once you wipe off the excess liquid, the mattress is just like new.
Sealy Supreme Sleep Mattress is manufactured to fit standard cribs and its dimensions also allow it to fit into most toddler beds. It is probably a good idea to use it for your toddlers first bed because, among other reasons, it will allow you to get the most life out of it. Many people purchase good quality crib mattresses like this one because they know they will outlast others, only to turn around and sell the mattress at a garage sale two years later. With such a long lifespan, it makes sense to transfer the mattress to a toddler bed once your little one has outgrown his/her crib, in order to get the most out of it.
Sealy Supreme Sleep Mattress retails for about $70, making it a middle- price mattress. There are other mattresses (from Sealy and other manufacturers) that are priced much higher, but for the price you pay and the quality you get, this is a very good mattress. It is very durable; firm yet soft on babies; and easily cleaned. It will last many years and it makes a good investment for a growing family that plans to have more children in the future or who plan to transfer it to a toddler bed once the crib stage is over. It ranks as yet another quality product from Sealy- a company I have been using and trusting for more than twenty years.
