Pros:Great for tight spots, and not real expensive.

Cons:Not very quiet.

The Bottom Line: Highly recommend for the everyday homeowner.

Let be the first to tell you that I have seen many tools that were gimmicks.  When my wife first asked me about it, and if I had seen the commercial on this tool, I told her that I had caught glimpses of it from time to time.  Therefore, the next time that I saw this on the TV I paid more attention on this product.  What I saw was what to be a gimmick because in one of the sequences during the ad, they would hold some six penny nails in their hand and when they switched back to the hammer there was a different nail inside of the hammer.  With all of what that, I had seen about this product this was not enough to convince me that this would really work.  However, my wife for some unknown reason kept on questioning me about my opinion of this product.  So I took this a step further and went to see if anyone else had heard about this type of hammer.  I went to Home Depot and they looked at me as I was crazy, they told me that no way would something this work.  Therefore, I let it go at that.  Nevertheless, my wife was very persistent and she knew that I liked all of these new types of tools and would love to test this one out.  So, therefore, off she went to the Sears Hardware store and there she found it laying on the shelf all chained up looking so sad, for the price of 99.99 plus tax.  She brought this home and found some of that fancy paper to wrap it in.  You know that stuff that looked similar to those bags with two plastic handles that you bring your stuff home from the store.  She did not want me to see what was inside so all she did was double up on the special wrapping bags to hide better.

Description

This automatic hammer weighs approximately 1 pound 14 ounces with the battery installed and is 10” in length.  This has a red trigger and the trademark color of black and grey with six or eight air vent slots, three or four on each side to help with the cooling.  Each of the parts you will notice that have their own serial number.  Right underneath the head, there is a led work light that only goes on when you squeeze the trigger. The magnetic end that holds the nails 7/16” and this will come with a 12-volt cordless motor.  The battery that comes with this (and yes you only get one), is a 12-volt Lithium-ion.  The charger will take an input of a regular 110-volt household outlet, with an operating temperature of 32 degrees -104 degrees F.  You will also receive a nice soft zippered black carrying case that will house the hammer, battery, charger, and the miniature wonder bar with extra room for another battery if you wish to purchase one. This nailer is made for all types of wood, simulated wood and plastics or even plasterboard, however, not for metal.

Experience

When I first saw that my purchased this to me I was very skeptical to say the least.  However, unlike some people I did not want to burst her bubble.  She was so proud of herself, (it was if she had just given birth to a new tool) but in reality it was because she had purchased something by herself that I did not have. After opening this up, I had to charge it up and that only took 30 minutes.  This came partially charged but it said not to use it until it was fully charged. It was a little early for an anniversary present but that did not matter, it was very nice of her to think of me.  That is why my wife is a very special nurse and has units fighting over her to keep her on the different units that she works. Just in case you are wondering how this is supposed to work, well theoretically an electromagnet located in the head is very strong, so that it will hold any common nail in place after the first few taps.  A metal sleeve will recede back inside the head when the nail is far enough inside of the wood and all you have to do are keep pressure on the nail until it becomes flush with the wood.

After this had enough charge to keep the little green led light from flashing and stay lit constantly then it was ok to use it. I proceeded to the garage and started locating a bunch of different size nails, from the little ones that were barely long enough to hold, all the way up to the size of 4” long.  At first I put the nail inside of the head and shook it vigorously all around real hard and the electromagnet did not lose its grip on the nail, it stayed securely inside of the head.  The next thing that I did was try and use it, but of course that failed, when I put the nail against the wood it wobbled all over the place and fell out of the hammer.  This is when “DUH” I thought to myself that you would have to hold the nail for the first couple of hits.  After the first failure, I did it properly and low and behold, it was a success, the nail went right through a 2 x 6 treated deck wood in less 2 seconds. This particular nail was over 2” long.  All of the nails that I tried subsequently worked perfectly.  When I started showing this to all of my friends they were amazed at the power that this had.  One of the times that I was demonstrating this tool to my friends, I did not have the hammer squarely on the head of the nail and you guessed it the nail not only bent but also it made it look like the letter c.  If you watch what you are doing then this hammer will not only push the nail through it will even push it a little beneath the surface, but be careful because you will leave marks if you continue to let this hit the wood.  This is a very powerful automatic hammer. I even tried it in some very tight spots and it did an excellent job. This will make a noise like a woodpecker knocking on a telephone pole. It is not quiet.

As for the battery, on your usual cordless ones they usually slow down when it is in need of a charge.  Well, not this one, when this happens its power will just drop very fast and there will be a definite difference in power, not a gradual loss in power. When this needs charging then you will have to take the battery out of the unit and install it into the charging base, the whole hammer unit will not fit into the charger.  All you have to do is just squeeze the two prongs on the sided of the battery and it should come out easily.  When installing this battery to the charger you should feel a slight pop when you push it in, and the lights should come on as soon as you do this.  If they do not, then it is not in all the way.

Another test that I gave this hammer was the how easy is this to use test.  I showed my 9-year-old daughter how to use it, then I let her try it, and she got it right on her first try.  Then the other test was to see if my wife could actually use something like this.  Well, with a little persuading she tried it.  Even though she is a very competent nurse, I think that she is best at purchasing tools and not using them. Need I say more?

The nails that they recommend to use [Bright Common size 4d, Shank Diameter 0.1”, Head Diameter ¼” length 1 ½”],  [Bright Finish 6d, Shank Diameter 0.091”, Head Diameter 9/64”, length 2”],  [Bright Finish 4d, Shank Diameter 0.072”, Head Diameter 7/64”, Length 1 ½”], [Coated Sinker 4d, Shank Diameter 0.08”, Head Diameter 13/64”, Length 1 3/8”], [Electro Galvanized Roofing 4d, Shank Diameter 0.12”, Head Diameter ¼”, Length 1 ½”], [Hot Tipped Galvanized finish 10d, Shank Diameter 0.115”, Head Diameter 3/8”, Length 3”], [Tempered Hard Trim 6d, Shank Diameter 0.07”, Head Diameter 9/64”, Length 2”].

Warranty

This comes with a one-year full warranty if not completely satisfied. Just return it to any Sears store across the US. They will either repair it or replace it whatever makes you happy.

Conclusion

I have not used this on all of these types of nails but I have used this on trim and other such woods around the house.  It does work will on wallboard but it will push it a little too far and it usually takes a screw with anchor to hold any pictures in place.  This does an excellent job on decks and lattice and other such jobs that have wood involved.  I did try this on some very thin metal and it still did a very good job but I would not recommend using this on metal all the time.  These are very new to the market and many people are very skeptical, take my word for it, I have put it through all of the paces, and it has passed with excellence. I can give this five out of five stars for workability, durability, and battery life.
