Pros:GOOD GERMINATION RATE, TASTY MELONS
The Bottom Line: Watermelon is a vine, plants can be expected to reach heights of about 12 inches and spread about 7 feet in each direction within a ten foot area.
Seeds of Change Incorporated's Seeds of Change Melon, Open-pollinated, Verona Watermelon is a good choice for growing near the hummingbird, pollinating insects including butterflies and bees and bird garden.

Developed by Mississippi State University in 1965; Citrullus lanatus, Verona, sets a nice production of good sized, rounded fruit having thin dark green skin which can be picked up to and following last frost, frost does not seem to bother the fruit at all. I prefer smaller melons, and leave most fruit on the vine with little thinning. Thinning developing fruit will produce larger, fewer melons. Depending on personal preference Verona fruit can be thinned or no.
Deep crimson, firm crisp flesh, dotted with good sized seeds, is delicious eaten sliced or chunked, I like to freeze some for adding to smoothie type drinks in fall and into winter. Chunks can be whirled in blender, frozen and eaten as cold frosty hot summer treat.
Can be started indoors using peat pellets and peat grow through pots for transplant to soil garden area. This is one plant I continue to plant in ground, Watermelon sprawls and needs room for growth.
To plant in outdoor garden, following last frost, work soil, add organic compost, sow seed in full sun area; seed depth is about 2 inches. I drop 5 to 7 seeds per hill when soil temps are about consistent at about 80° F for optimum germination. Germination can be expected in about 10 to 15 days depending upon soil and environment temps.
Hill spacing following thinning of the germinated seed will be about 8 feet distant. I generally leave 2 plants per hill in case one dies. Harvest, depending upon soil and air temps will be about 80 days from transplant or 70 to 100 days from germination.
Watermelon is a vine, plants can be expected to reach heights of about 12 inches and spread about 7 feet in each direction within a ten foot area. Planting along the edge of the garden, or in an area set apart from rows reduces chance of overgrowth.
Verona does best in an area having well drained, fertile soil in a full sun location. Application of organic compost material to soil prior to sowing seed and again as plants are maturing aids in holding moisture during production as well as feeds maturing plant. I mulch at base of plant using old hay, straw or shredded newspaper, fruit production is nicer when developing melons are not left to mature touch soil. Boards set under developing fruit will protect the melons from rot if mulch is not used.
Verona has average water needs, about an inch of water each week; during heat of summer, especially droughty weather, ground level flooding the growing area with water hose is beneficial. Do not overhead irrigate during heat of day.
Harvest can begin when thumping melon results in a -hollow- sound. Cut, do not pull fruit from the vine to prevent damage to the vine itself.
Verona Watermelon tolerates heat as well as cooler temps and can be grown from the Gulf east to Canadian area. Well adapted to cool climates, Verona is a hardy, Wilt Tolerant, Anthracnose resistant variety which can be counted on for prolific and early harvest.
