Re: Really interesting review.... (Reply to this comment)
by moucon
I know it's 6 years later - but this still irks me. How can that possibly be a good review? It's totally unsubstantiated. Do you really believe nobody returned her emails or picked up the phone? I don't. These dudes are spending tens of millions on TV and radio spots, they're not going to destroy their credibility by blowing off customers like that. Exaggerate the quality and benefits in order to jack up the price - absolutely - but they need a 100% happy camper userbase to continue selling product. The easy way to get that is to over-do 'the customer is always right' even if they aren't. Select Comfort is priced so they can probably replace the product 3-4 times and still show a profit (which is why you can get brand new 'refurb' product from them for a fraction of the original price).

One more thought on the 'bad' customer service. (Reply to this comment)
by moucon
Could it possibly be you bought some other brand? There are ComfortAire and a couple other similar-sounding companies out there making air mattresses. PS - I don't own one of these and have never dealt with any of the companies - but like I said in my last comment - your experience seems too out-of-whack with what others have told me - both here and in-person.

Seems incredible (meaning NOT credible) to me (Reply to this comment)
by moucon
Your review of their customer service does not seem credible to me - not saying you're a liar, but everyone else has praised SelectComfort for quickly responding, sending replacement parts quickly, etc. You make it sound like you couldn't raise anyone by either e-mail or phone - like some fly-by-night operation, and frankly - I don't believe that.

We are currently waiting for our refund check. It has taken almost 2 monthes to get our bed returned. We had a terrible foundation from Select Comfort. The mattress rolled, would not stay inflated, number flucuated continuously. The Customer Service department was uselesses.

We just got our Select Comfort bed. The 5000 Series King and we are already having problems. We have both our settings at 100 and it's still not enough support. You can literally SEE where the mattress dips when you aren't on it. There is a definite slant to it on one side and the other side is slightly firmer but still not firm or supportive. Customer Service told me how to check the pump and the connections and it did allow me to blow it up a little more but it's still noticably softer than it was in the store. We visited the store at least 7 time before purchasing it and each time my setting was at 55. Customer Service extended our return option for another 30 days because they want us to give it more time and they are sending us a new pump. I just want to return it and now I keep hearing horror stories about how they not really going to let me return it. Then I find this site and I'm more freaked out about it than ever... of course, the lack of sleep and back pain could be contributing to it. Any suggestions?

Your Select Comfort Bed (Reply to this comment)

I have worked for Select Comfort for three years at a store in Texas. I wanted to apologize for the problems that you have had. I would hate for you to throw out what I know to be an amazing bed. If you still have the bed I would like to help you get your problems taken care of. Feel free to send me an e-mail at kim_pattillo@hotmail.com, and I will do everything I can to help.

Deja Vu (Reply to this comment)
by birtclp
I had a very similar experience with our mattress. First 18 months thing was ok (not great but not bad), then leaks, pump malfunction, and worst of all mattress won't hold shape and sags in the middle. Select Comfort hasn't returned emails and told me over phone they don't warrant leaks in the air mattresses. Like you, we now have a $1,200 attic ornament.

Your friend who owns the mattress store is naturally going to bad mouth his competition.
Nothing is perfect and it seems that Select Comfort does care enough to provide a 20 year
warranty and an 800 number for owners to call.
After you have owned a spring mattress for 2 years what will your friend do about a problem you have?
At best they will send a representative out that will inform you your problem is normal "wear and tear"
and that there is nothing the company will do about your issues.

hard to believe (Reply to this comment)
by eflkaz
We've own Select Comfort for about 7 years and we haven't had any problems with our bed. As a a matter of fact it's been just awesome. We did replace a controller but Select Comfort immediately shipped us one right away. We recommended our bed to atleast 20 peolple over the years and not one compliant. Maybe you purchased a Comfortaire Mattress ? They seem to have all the Air Mattresses problems.

The company store would help you. The Elite model does not have a wireless remote, so look at it more closely to make sure. If you are really having problems, try writing the BBB.

by thrdbear
We purchased our Select Comfort bed two years ago and couldn't be more happy with it. I never wake up with a sore, aching back anymore. We bought the top of the line king-size with dual controls, warranteed for 20 years. I would recommned this highly. Comfort is worth any price.

Your mistaken, Comfortair was founded by the original creator of Select Comfort. And, the patents he made are still with SC so there is no way that Comfortair is superior in any way!

Great information here, Jillian! (Reply to this comment)
by randfan
I have heard numerous ads for this bed on the radio and have often wondered about it. (For the record, a good friend of mine owns a chain of mattress stores, and he doesn't care for this bed.) Since I have an arthritic back, I've wondered if this bed could help. Your review is chock-full of good information, and I especially like the warranty info and customer service experience info.
I noticed you got a NH review from another person. I must say, I disagree with giving a NH review to a review that is so obviously well thought out and articulated. Whether or not I agree with you that the bed is for me, I respect the good information and thought you put into this review. Good job!!

Thanks Lorace....I hardly think that I deserved an NH for this one....but everyone has thier own opinions and I obviously don't agree with his..lol
I read alot of reviews that I don't agree with either...should I go back and rate thiers NH? LOL
sorry, I couldn't resist....but honestly, I'm not that mean.

Great review (Reply to this comment)
by lorace
Finally, a mattress review that I can understand!
I can't stand waterbeds, actually, I hate them. LOL But I can understand why other people do, and I share in your consternation of how your $1200 investment didn't pay off.
Another thing I wonder about is why someone would give you a NH rating on this review. If it were poorly written, I'd understand, but this was neat. Disagreeing with a viewpoint doesn't seem a good criterion for downrating, otherwise, half the reviews I rate would be NH's. ROFL
Thanks, Jillian,
Lorace

Your Warranty (Reply to this comment)
by Penguinlady
We bought the same mattress, but in an Eastern King size. We have had ours for just over three years and are delighted with it every morning.
The warranty on ours was 20 years, and I assume that you got the same one. So don't give up. If your air-bags are leaking, the warranty should cover new ones, and a NEW pump.
Hang in there - this really is a good mattress!

customer service was helpful (Reply to this comment)
by jthormel
Some people just can't handle themselves, I would like to hear how going from a waterbed, to a select comfort, back to an innerspring did for their backs. I have had my Select Comfort over 10 years and their customer service dept. has always helped me. Maybe this is because I CALLED THEM, I didn't "email them". I am disappointed this person turned off people to a bed I love and from the sound of it gave them a good nights sleep.
I don't know about you but I am not cheap enough to deal with a backache for twenty years? Twenty years, come on now...keeping your bed for twenty years, do me a favor if your bed is that old get a Select Comfort it's helped me and open your old bed up and see what's inside.

A Helpful Warning (Reply to this comment)
by pdxwriter
I'm in the market for a new mattress, and because -- in general -- air mattresses have received good reviews from folks, I expected that Select Comfort would also have a number of good reviews. It is, after all, one of the most widely advertised and distributed brands. This review was a wake-up call. Leaky air bladders and dead air pumps (after just two years) are a Very Bad Sign indeed!
Folks put off by this review, however, might want to check the Epinions that have been posted about Comfortaire Mattresses. Select Comfort was formed by a former Comfortaire employee. Select has far higher overhead, far pushier sales tactics, far higher prices, and in some (very clear) respects a lower-quality product. Leastways, that's the impression I get from comparing reviews as well as the respective company and retailer websites.

Thank you (Reply to this comment)
by dindygirl
I was considering getting one of these but between the leaks and the dying pump I probably will get a regular mattress. Most people buy mattresses and expect 15 - 20 years use. Granted my Select Comfort mattress may not start having problems until 4, 6, or 8 years down the road, there is still a potential. At least with a normal mattress you don't get leaks and there is no pump to break. Thanks for the eye opener.

Really interesting review.... (Reply to this comment)
by GuisBuild
well written, but I also knew nothing of Select Comfort and what's so "special" about the mattress. Granted if it's falling apart in two years I guess the "special" wasn't so special - but I still learned something.
Nice review.
