Pros: Adjustable firmness, separate air chambers, doesn't make you hot like tempurpedic.
Cons: Slightly higher price than traditional mattresses but equitable if you order from their outlet store.
The Bottom Line: Excellent bed and would recommend to anyone. Buy outlet bed if price is concern.

| bumbie's Full Review: Select Comfort Mattress Sleep Number 5000 |
We have had a Sleep Number bed for over a year and still love it! I recommend it to anyone who is shopping for a new bed. I fall asleep faster, toss and turn a LOT less, and I don't nearly the amount of numb limbs like I used to. And the fact that it doesn't transfer motion like a regular bed is AWESOME! I used to wake up when my husband came to bed. Now I sleep right through!
When we decided to upgrade our old bed to a king-size, we asked friends and coworkers about the select comfort beds. Of about 10 people, only 1 had a bad experience and sent theirs back (see comment 7). The other 9 we extremely happy with theirs. So we decided to check it out. Here's what I recommend to anyone who is thinking about this bed:
1. GO TO A STORE AND TRY IT OUT. Then go home, think about it, and in a few days GO BACK TO THE STORE AND TRY IT OUT AGAIN! Don't let the sales people pressure you. Roll around on the bed and act like you would when you fall asleep. If you have a partner, make sure you both test it out together.
2. If the price is making you hesitate, you can buy one of their beds from their outlet store and save significant dollars (like hundreds!). But the catch is YOU DO NOT GET THE 30 DAY IN HOME TRIAL NOR CAN YOU DO THEIR SPECIAL FINANCING DEALS! All outlet store sales are final. We bought through the outlet because we needed a new bed anyway, and we were happy with our experience trying out the bed in the store. MAKE SURE THE SALES STAFF DOES NOT TELL YOU THEY CANNOT ORDER AN OUTLET BED FOR YOU! THEY TRIED THIS ON US BUT WE KNEW BETTER! WE FINALLY GOT THEM TO ORDER IT FOR US FROM THE STORE. But you can order from their outlet store via phone, too. Typically, the outlet store beds are last years model.
3. If you value your time and don't mind paying a few bucks for them to install it, I recommend you have them install it. We did that and it was worth every penny! I know of others that installed it themselves and they said it wasn't too bad but it did take 2+ hours. I'm sorry, but it's worth another $50 or so to me to pay them to do it.
4. I know others complain that the bed is just foam and rubber so why so expensive? But why is a traditional mattress made of just wood and steel expensive either??
5. The foam "bar" in the middle doesn't bother us at all! We aren't cuddle-sleepers but when we do cuddle I don't even really notice it.
6. If you have a person who weights 175 lbs or more and they like a fairly soft bed, just realize that it means that their side will look droopy when they are not in bed (just because their air chamber isn't as full of air as a chamber for a lighter person or someone who likes a firmer setting). This isn't bad, just something to note if you like your bed to look like it was made military-fashion. :)
7. Air pressure is influenced by air temperature! So if the temperature in your house fluctuates (esp. with a programmable thermostat), make sure you set the sleep number at a time when the temperature is close to sleeping-temperature! And if you have a really hot or cold day and your house doesn't maintain a normal temperature, you may see the setting on the bed rise/drop 10-15 points due to that. I just check the setting every few weeks or once/month and in 14 months I've probably adjusted it slightly 3 times due to temperature fluctuations. Nothing big but just understand that that is probably why you may see your the Sleep Number change on you when you check it. This was the issue our one friend had with the bed; but they didn't figure out why it was doing it & just sent it back. I'm kind of surprised Select Comfort didn't realize this and tell them... I figured it out by simple physics!
8. We originally wanted wired remotes so we each had one but they gave us a free wireless one by accident. We LOVE the wireless one! I'm glad they made a mistake. :)
9. Lastly, whenever I travel I miss my bed terribly!! I can't wait to get home to my own bed. :)
