Pros: You can control how hard or soft it is.
Cons: Not good for a hot sleeper but with the mattress pad is awesome!
The Bottom Line: I wish I would not have bought this bed. It's too hot and I'd like to sleep in the same bed with my husband again.

| debnj's Full Review: Select Comfort Mattress Sleep Number 5000 |
My husband has back pain and sleeps very hot. We looked for quite awhile before settling on the Select Comfort. We initially were going to buy the 4000 but the sales person asked if either of us got hot as we slept. My husband really does. So we were presented with all the reasons why the 5000 takes care of this problem. He said it was designed to breathe and be cooler. The only reason we upgraded to the 5000 was because of this sales pitch. Our experience couldn't be further from the truth.
The bed is comfortable and I love sleeping in it (although I have to admit, I'm a bit hotter as well), but the bed wasn't purchased for my sleep issues. I could sleep on just about anything and be happy. My husband, on the other hand, has not had a complete night's sleep on it since we purchased it about six months ago.
We've tried working it out with Customer Service a number of times but their suggestions are lame and don't solve the problem. They suggest keeping it away from a heat source (it is), using 100% cotton bedding (we always have), reducing the amount of bedding (we only use one sheet and a light comforter), and take out the foam over the air chamber. That last suggestion changes depending on who you talk to. Some customer service reps say never to do that, others tell you to. Depends on the day I guess. After being given the same lame suggestions if I ask for further help, they reply I get is "I don't know what else you want me to do". What kind of award winning service is that?
At any rate, I'm not satisfied that I paid the amount I did for this bed and it is not as it was advertised to be. I'm also not happy that with the amount of money we spent since my husband is not able to sleep in it since his sleep issues were why we bought it.
I also feel like Select Comfort uses false advertising when they say this reduces the heat. Our experience is that it's hotter than ever. I wish I could say that's for a good reason!
What good is a bed if it's too hot to sleep in?
I'd like to update: 2 weeks ago we got a surprise call from Select Comfort. They were testing a new mattress pad that might alleviate the excess heat we were experiencing and did we want to try it out for them? My husband gave an emphatic yes. It works incredibly well and keeps the bed cool! Now we don't have the heat problem and we love the bed. With this in mind I would recommend the bed.
