Pros: Yes, her side is set much softer (35) than my side (55).
Cons: High cost. Maybe some bowing (displacement) if you're really, really heavy.
The Bottom Line: I enthusiastically recommend this if you are not happy with standard mattresses. I recommend trying it even if you are happy with normal mattresses. We love it!

| brownj00's Full Review: Select Comfort Mattress Sleep Number 5000 |
My wife had chronically complained about being uncomfortable on our old bed (King about 7 years old). We had a good mattress and a $50 foam egg-crate kind of mattress cover on top of that. Time to upgrade.
We checked in to several kinds of mattresses. I was interested in the Tempurpedic. We sampled one at the Brookstone store. It felt nice. Like floating, although I could see how the slight, slow 'sinking' feeling could put some people off. But then I read online some complaints about people being hot on them because maybe they don't absorb body heat well enough. That is a slight concern for us (in Atlanta).
A trusted chiropractor had the same observation about the Tempurpedic when he'd owned one, and that he had tried many beds over the last ten years. His recommendation was the SelectComfort hands down. I was skeptical- our opinion was all that mattered, but it was a referral worth listening to. Okay, we started looking at that - and demo'd it at the store.
We got the model 5000 (Expanded Queen size, six inches wider than normal Q and we use K sheets just fine) with the "Pillowtop comfort". Actually it's a nice, dense foam insert that goes into a zip-up cover purpose-built on top the mattress cover. So it's all one piece zipped up. Very nice covering on top that looks like a normal high end mattress. Other models may have other options.
We have had it for eight months now. Very happy with it. Wife no longer complains or sleeps on the couch. Sleep does seem more restful, I don't wake up tossing and turning in the middle of the night, and she doesn't wake me up doing it either. I don't usually care to write reviews but I will in this case.
I've seen complaints in other postings I'd like to comment on. My wife and I are average size (200/115 lbs). It's possible if you weigh 300lbs+ each, a couple might not like this bed, I can't say otherwise. It is noticeable that if you put a lot of weight in the middle, the head and feet might raise a little (about 1 inch with my 60lb. daughter standing on my stomach), but that is nothing like the 'deluxe' camping air mattress we have. No complaints at all about "sleeping hot" and I normally sweat when I sleep late on summer mornings, so I think I'd have noticed if it bothered me. If that's a big concern for you, I'd suggest maybe not getting the Pillowtop comfort option (it occurs to me you can always take the foam pad out as well, as easy as changing sheets).
However I found in the store demo that I was noticeably less comfortable directly on top of the airchamber- esp. when changing pressure, on say a Model 3000, without the foam Pillowtop so I chose to pay for the Model 5000 with it. No complaints.
Sometimes we adjust the pressure up or down, usually it stays where it is. The pressure does change as the temperature does, so you may have to check it and set it periodically - takes all of 5 seconds with the remote every other week I guess.
The motor on the pump is very quiet on the Model 5000. You can hear it at night if you adjust the pressure, but not much (it is under the bed). I had to laugh when a coworker asked if it sounded like a generator. No. Wife can change it when I'm asleep and I barely notice, and I sleep lightly.
What else? Setup was very easy, don't hesitate to do it yourself. We got the "foundation" too. You get five or six big boxes delivered, but it's all lightweight (remember, no springs, no heavy mattress). Took my wife and I about an hour. Although we're comfortable with tools (only a screwdriver and a mallet or hammer are needed if I remember correctly), I really think almost anybody can do it.
After assembly, it really seems to be about a normal bed. Our 60lb. daughter can stand on and bounce on it (doesn't bounce much though - remember no springs). [And yes Mother, I discourage jumping on the bed.] The materials appear to be well designed and manufactured. I was initially put off by the thought of assembling an "air mattress" for my bed, but now I just have to laugh at myself. This is NOT the $50 air mattress you used at your Uncle's house. It's solid.
I want to buy one for my Mother, if that tells you anything. As always, try before you buy if you can.

Zzzz...
