Pros: No flipping. Individual comfort settings.
Cons: COST. Mattress is flimsy. Also, very hot to sleep on, especially at lower settings.
The Bottom Line: The benefit received does not justify the $$.

| mvmone's Full Review: Select Comfort Mattress Sleep Number 5000 |
My wife and I took delivery of this bed a little over a month ago. Call me a sucker, but I got sucked in by this whole air-mattress scam, too. Wed looked at the Tempur-pedic mattresses and I felt that they were very comfortable to lie on, but they felt hot and they were 2x the price of the Sleep Number bed. My last mattress was hard as a rock and I never liked it, so I figured I couldnt go wrong with this.
As others have already stated numerous times, the parts that make up the whole just make you shake your head and say Why the hell did I just spend over a grand for this?
Personally, I got talked into a hybrid version of the 5000, called the 5000 Plus. It has the same pump, remotes, and foam padding as the 7000, but doesnt have the cashmere or whatever top layer. Somehow they justify charging an addition $1000 for that model. Unlike others, I didnt have much problem putting it together, you just have to force the frames cross-pieces together. I found it very easy to just put them on the floor and step on them using my body weight to press them together. The instructions were well illustrated and very easy to follow. Having put it together, I was very excited to sleep on it, thats until I actually slept on it.
Im not sure if its just me or what, but I cant find a comfortable sleep number. Ive been a back sleeper most of my life, but this thing keeps flipping me onto my side. My wife and I are both relatively light people, shes 5ֶ 135 and Im 5㤓 165, yet I found myself falling into the middle of the bed. I took it apart and checked everything to be sure it was together and it was. I called customer service and they asked if either of us was much heavier than the other, I said only about a 30lb difference. They seemed puzzled, but immediately sent out (I think it was called) a lift kit which consisted of 3 more of the center foam pieces that divides the mattresses and 2 1-inch foam pieces to lay below each mattress. I installed them and that has kept me out of the middle of the bed, however, I still wake up on my side with my arm and shoulder asleep. I cannot ever remember waking up on my side, yet now its almost a certainty. The settings are either too hard, or so soft that my feet end up resting on the outer foam, while my butt is well below, this puts a lot of tension on your knees. The first few nights Id wake up with pain/stiffness in my knees. Id then up the level and wake up with a sore back. Im still not settled on a number, but Im now trying numbers below 35.
In the month Ive been sleeping on it, Ive since developed a periodic spasm in the lower left of my back. Ive yet to awaken feeling fully rested on this bed. I will say though that it is marginally more comfortable than the 10-year old mattress it replaced, but certainly not $1000 more comfortable. Like others have stated, my wife likes it. It seems to be a trend, I wonder if it was developed by a woman? They seem to be better able to find comfort on it. Maybe us guys are just whiners though, who knows?
Just an update to this: It's been about a year and I'm still not sold on the bed. I don't wake up in the middle of the night like I used to, but still don't wake up feeling "refreshed." I think the biggest issue with these beds stems from their being glorified air mattresses. They don't support your body weight evenly because of displacement. If you're body is displacing the air from one area, it just redistributes to another. Just like a waterbed...sans the H20. This redistribution of air can't possibly promote proper spine alignment. Next time, I'll be looking into the Dux bed or a Tempurpedic, for now, at least my chiropractor's happy with the bed.;)
