The sleep number bed is just a glorified aero mattress. Honestly, you would be better off if you buy a cheap aero mattress and spend another $100 for a pad on top of it.

Seriously, I watched them assemble the bed and to my amusement I discovered that what goes inside a fancy envelop of fabric is just like the aerobed that you get at bed bath and beyond.
The bed does not retain the number that you set - so you go to sleep in one number and wake up on a totally different one. I am not a heavy person, so I would always setup my number to something really low (like 20) and wake up with the firmest bed you can possibly imagine (50 or 60) e a huge back pain.
I have a friend that has the total opposite problem. He is heavy and sets up the bed to a high number just to wake up on a "flat tire".
The return policy is a total rip-off too. I called in after 20 days of back pain - they told me I cannot return the bed before the full 30 days. They wanted me to extend the trial period - Christen on the phone even wanted to ship me a pad so that the bed would be more comfortable (meaning they do know their product totally sucks). When I said ship me the pad then so that I can go through the last days of "required" trial she said, "well, if you are not going to keep it I can't send you the pad - the company will be out of money that way". Meaning.... they don't care about me being in pain, they just wanted to see if there was any possible way that they could lure me into keeping the bed.
They charge another $199.99 to ship the bed back. When asked why the return charge is more than the original shipping charge ($159) Christen said that they have to charge for shipping for returns. That is total "bs".
So in summary.... don't spend your money on a glorified aerobed. If you want a bed like this, really - go buy the aerobed instead. You will have a better night of sleep with it and feel much better about your money.
