Pros: 20 year limited warranty, well-constructed, lightweight, extremely comfortable!
Cons: Pricey, up to 3 weeks delivery time, but worth it!
The Bottom Line: The 7000 will work for almost anyone, but is especially good for people experiencing back pain or fibromyalgia.

| redeemersgirl's Full Review: Select Comfort Mattress Sleep Number 7000 |
I had been experiencing severe lower back pain, to the point of respiratory restriction, for months due to our inner spring. I insisted I thought a Tempurpedic mattress was the answer to my problem, and my husband obliged.
We bought it and at first, it was better. After about a month, though, the pain was creeping back up. Okay, so now I've got a $1700 bed...better make the best of it.
Ah, but then my husband coerced me into trying the SelectComfort 7000. He got me to lay down on it, they located my sleep number and wow. I could barely keep my eyes open right there in the store!
No, no, no, I won't do it! Cashmere padded mattress cover, whisper quiet air motor(on certain models), 300TC sheets, yeah, nice, but still! (Well, actually, WONDERFUL)...I bucked, I kicked, I refused! I was NOT going to spend $3000 on a darn "air mattress" when the much-touted Tempurpedic didn't even work! But, after about 3 more weeks (and more and more pain), I capitulated out of desperation and he ordered.
(Spring for the in-home delivery and set-up, if it's available. They have guys who specialize in doing it, plus I think they remove your old bedding if you want. It's really worth the extra $150-$200--otherwise, you get anywhere from 4 to 10 UPS boxes delivered, it can be kind of intimidating AND if you already suffer from back problems, putting the darn thing together won't help it!)
Anyways, it's been over 2 months since we got our SelectComfort 7000, and now I understand how much Bill loves me! I've never slept better, the pain is non-existent and it's still as comfortable as it was the very first night. We also got the special SideSleeper pillows, mid-range of the 3 styles they carry, which also made an incredible difference. I was used to sleeping with at least 2 pillows, sometimes more, but I learned quickly (and surprisingly!) that too many pillows is also part of a lot of back and neck problems! Now it's just one pillow, Sleep Number 35, SelectComfort sheets as soft as butter after just 2 washings...I'm out like a light, sleep the entire night (or as long as I'm able--when you're able to sleep this deeply, you'll discover your body simply doesn't need as much sleep as it used to!), and I haven't experienced so much as a twinge since we got it. Plus, now my husband sleeps so deeply and so well, I darn near need a crowbar to get him out of the bed in the morning for work! You may even find yourself looking for excuses to go to bed early once you get it--we sure did.
The Tempurpedic has since been banished to the guest room... LOL
And just a side note -- If it's at all possible, do NOT just buy a SelectComfort bed online untried. If you can, find your nearest SelectComfort store and visit them! Let the salesperson do his/her job...they're each trained to take their time and find out exactly what's best for you, using some pretty impressive state-of-the-art tools like the Pressure-Mapping Monitor. (You lie down and it shows them, kind of like infrared, where your highest pressure points are--usually hips and shoulders for side sleepers and behinds for back sleepers--which cause you to toss, turn, not sleep deeply and create the pain problems a lot of us experience.)
Once they've pinpointed the problem, they start manipulating your Sleep Number (from 10 to 100, 100 being the firmest) and adjust the mattress firmness level until, with your feedback, they find your personal, perfect Sleep Number. It's worth the extra time. Besides, why not let them do what they're best at? If you're willing to spend the extra money to have the best night's sleep you can have, why not find out what's perfect for you and get your money's worth?
REM--here I come! ;-D

UPDATE - 6/12/2006:
Still loving this bed!! It turns out I have a herniated disk causing the excruciating back pain, and sleeping on the Select Comfort bed has actually helped it.
We also had a small issue with one of the chambers within the last 2 weeks (my side, go figure!) and had to contact Select Comfort's customer service department. Remember that 20-year warranty thing? Bill simply explained the problem and no kidding, within 72 hours, a new chamber was sitting at my door via UPS. No questions, no arguments, and no more money!! I haven't seen that kind of *real* customer service in years!
Oh, and while I'm at it, just an FYI for you -- I found out that Select Comfort also donates Sleep Number beds to the Ronald McDonald House organization for the children treated there; it's been proven that the units are helping the kids get better, much-needed sleep. I was even more impressed, and am now a Sleep Number for Life customer! :-)
