After hearing from a friend about the comfort of the bed, reading the mixed reviews and testing it several times at the stores, my husband & I purchased the Sleep Number 7000.
Our old bed was a Beautyrest, but quite firm so we had backaches constantly. He likes his bed mushy, I like my bed with a small amount of firmness. We thought having the benefit of setting our own firmness would be great.
The $3500 price tag was worth it if we could sleep well every night without any problems. We were wrong! This bed is overpriced and we couldn't wait to return it. We ordered the King size Sleep Number 7000 bed because it seemed more comfortable than the 5000 & a tad cheaper than the 9000. We set it up quickly and tried it out. We should have really thought long and hard about a bed that comes in 3 boxes you can assemble yourself! After seeing the assembly, I felt like I just overpaid for a fancy air mattress. After picking up the whole mattress & thinking about it now, it was an overpriced fancy mattress!
We slept ok the first few nights, we thought it was just a matter of finding the right number. Then I realized I'd go to sleep with the bed set at 80 and wake up with the bed at anywhere between 35-10 or at 100! I'm a petite Chinese woman so there shouldn't be such huge fluccuations! I called to complain, Customer service was good. They shipped us out a new pump & remote right away. This was about 15 days into our 30 day trial. After the pump, we found our numbers & woke up with no backaches. BUT we were crabbier than two crabs without claws! We felt exhausted even though we sleep 8 hours each night. It wasn't pretty, as a teacher to little ones, my patience was truly stretched because I was so exhausted everyday. We called Select Comfort, asked for an extension on our 30 day trial & received an additional 30 days to continue trying it out. We were undecided if it was the bed that was bad or just us.
We did more research & found that restless sleep was very common for the Sleep Number people. We "slept" but didn't REM or deep dream, causing our bodies to wake up exhausted night after night. I would wake up many nights at 2:20 for no reason... just wake up and couldn't fall asleep until almost 4am! My husband & I went away on our honeymoon, slept like babies in the resort bed & came home rested & happy. Then 4 nights into sleeping on our Sleep Number 7000 bed and we were not the happy fun honeymooned couple anymore.
I also noticed that the bed would make us hot. Living in Chicago, we had the bed during Jan./Feb. We went 42 days with 30 degree days & even colder nights. We slept with our windows cracked open & had to throw off our covers half way though the night because we were so hot! Not sure what about the bed made this happen, but it wasn't pleasant.
Customer service was friendly when I called to return the bed. We couldn't pack it away fast enough. We purchased a King size Sterns & Fosters Euro Deluxe Luxury Pillowtop mattress to replace the Sleep Number & we're back to being the happy fun couple! After a week of not sleeping on the Sleep Number we noticed that we were dreaming again, waking up rested and not crabby anymore. The top of the line king size mattress from Sterns & Foster cost more than half of what the King size Sleep Number 7000 bed did.
Now, it's waiting for the refund!
For some this bed might be great... if you have backaches & you don't sleep well, for us... it wasn't worth the money.
