Pros: Great comfort, can "adjust out" sagging, etc., all components replaceable.
Cons: High price (but for us, its worth it)
The Bottom Line: We find this the perfect solution to our sleepless nights, and highly recommend the Select Comfort Sleep Number 7000 bed.

| fshagan's Full Review: Select Comfort Mattress Sleep Number 7000 |
The Select Comfort beds are built around an inflatable mattress that looks pretty sturdy, more like the material found on a Zodiac boat than the temporary air mattresses you buy for guests. The difference between the various models has to do with how many of the air mattresses there are, and what goes on top of them. In the Cal King size, we were looking at the Model 4000 (some foam and padding on top of the air mattresses), the Model 5000 (more foam on top of the air mattress) and the Model 7000, which has 3" of latex foam and another 1" of "eggcrate" foam. On all, the mattress appears just like a regular mattress, but when you unzip it, you find some high density foam that forms the perimeter (and allows you to sit on the edge of the bed), the foam (3" on the Model 7000), a layer of eggcrate foam, then the two air mattresses with a dividing wall of the higher density foam down the middle.
After spending $2,500 on a top line Sterns and Foster mattress, and then finding the pillow top and soft padding we loved so much crushed down within one year, we were ready to spend what was needed to get a good night's sleep. My wife likes her bed a bit firmer, but I prefer a softer mattress; but because of my back I have to have one that's uniform and not "soft in the middle".
After reading the reviews here, we knew to take all the components out of the shipping boxes and allow them to air out. Foam often has an almost mechanical oily type of smell, and the latex foam did have it. We were surprised that after about two hours of airing out, it seemed to be minimized quite a bit.
We bought the foundation also, which is about $250, and I think it is fine. Some reviewers are distressed by the "milk crate plastic" it is made out of, but I always like to see easily recycled materials used when possible. When assembled, the foundation forms a great platform for the mattress.
Assembly is not too hard ... you start with the mattress covering and then install the perimeter foam, air mattresses, divider foam and start layering the "toppings" on top of the air mattresses (the eggcrate foam, etc.) When done, you zip up the bottom chamber and then open the zipper for the top chamber. The 3" latex foam goes in this "pillow top" chamber. We like the idea that all of these components are easily reached, and are replaceable, unlike our costly Sterns and Foster mattress which was trash after only a year.
The first few nights we played with the hardness control. My wife settled on "50" and I like "45". But I also have a lumbar disc problem, so I sometimes adjust it if my back is hurting. Being able to do this really helps my overall comfort, as I can "tune" the bed to my condition at the time. We also find that I can get into the bed without my wife noticing; the twin air chambers really do isolate the movement of your mate to that one side of the bed.
