| djgeiger's Full Review: Select Comfort Sleep Number 4000 Traditional Bed |
I never even pondered sleeping by number. Still seems to be a strange concept. The Select Comfort 4000 ended up being exceptional with unexpected results. I use to sleep on a fluffy pillow top and it had to be top of the line. Frankly, I felt like the Princess and the Pea. By Hans Christian Andersen having to be so fussy when it came to a bed.
However, I am very common but my body is not.
Why I needed a new bed
I had a serious injury in 1992 both my neck and back were involved. My first bed after my accident was a top of the line King Coil. Sleeping was still quite painful. That bed met its demise when I went from Northern Minnesota to California for Christmas in 1998. I was recently divorced when a female friend and her son moved in with me to help both of us with expenses. I lived back in the woods on a forest service road. I had a woodstove. The last thing I said before I left please keep the woodstove turned way down. It will burn the house down. The young boy turned it up all the way a fire started in the attic. My bed and my computer were under the attic. Between the water damage and smoke damage, the bed was a goner.
Shortly after that, I remarried in the year 1998 and we bought another King Koil with a 13 ½-inch pillow top. I loved that bed. The King Koil was the only piece of furniture we moved to California. After spending approximately $7000 on the move to Oklahoma, I tired of paying for the same furniture again. Around the year 2004, it began get saggy and lumpy. In addition, my spine deteriorated to the point I could not sleep on either side without waking up about every 15-20 minutes to roll over.
It was time for a new bed. I knew even the pillow top would not allow me to sleep on my sides. I cant sleep on my stomach because of my spine and I would no longer be married if I slept on my back. I wake myself up; snoring sounds like a chainsaw.
My husband and I shopped all over looking for a bed I could sleep on. I was in a constant state of zombie because of lack of sleep. We saw the Select Comfort advertisements on television. I was quite dubious that the Select Comfort could live up to the claims. Because of desperation, we decided to give it a chance. First we called the 800 number talked with a representative who was polite and very helpful. It was as if they were not trying to rush through to get to the next customer. Customer service these days is getting bad. This was a pleasant surprise. She answered our questions, explained everything we needed to know, and then sent a video, which explained the bed thoroughly.
We watched the video and were impressed but still uncertain. However, the video and representative said there were a 30-day risk free trial and a 20-year limited warranty. By then I was becoming very hopeful I would be able to get a decent night sleep with the Select Comfort. Like a child, I wanted it now!
First, we had to go through the choices. We did not want to finance although they do have reasonable financing. We wanted to pay cash. We compared the options and decided on the Select Comfort 4000. It came with a nine-inch mattress with some pillow top we could have ordered an 11-inch pillow top for an additional $200. With the air chambers, we felt that would not be necessary. The mattress cost 899.99. The foundation was $399.99. In total, we had 1454.60 in the bed. We called to make the order. They said it would be delivered to our doorstep in seven to 10-days. I was doing the bad child thing really looking forward to sleeping all night for the first time in a long time. I was a little upset that it would take that long, it didnt. It showed up in four days and as they promised at our door by UPS. The bed was in several boxes.
The components of the bed were a mattress cover, foam base pad in a nice little bag, foam border walls, four corner locks, duel air chambers, the firmness control with remote, center foam wall, and a comfort pad. The foundation came in eight pieces.
The foundation went together easily. It was like an eight-piece jigsaw puzzle. Four sides and four pieces set on top formed the rectangle. The foundation pieces are made of high-density polymer, which will not warp like traditional wood box springs. All in all the bed was very easy to assemble. The queen size Select Comfort took up no more room than our queen size King Koil. The fact that the bed is in pieces over large mattress will make it easier for our next move.
One added advantage already, regular queen sheets would fit on the Select Comfort the 13 ½ inch King Koil required pillow top sheets. The bed is also easier to make up. When I tried to stretch fitted sheets over the King Koil, it was difficult and the sheets would not stay in place. Select Comfort has sheets available for better fit. I didnt see the need to spend the extra money. However, the fitted queen sheet is a bit baggy for the bed. Other products available PillowFit pillows, Duel Weight Euroloft Comforter (goose down), Dual Weight Primaloft All-Season Comfort Set filled with hypoallergenic down alternative. When the weather becomes cold, the two pieces snap together. This I am considering.
The dual air chambers have a center foam wall eliminating the feel of motion from the person next to you. Our Select Comfort 4000 came with a single remote the dual chambers controlled by a right and left button, which is more than adequate. The Select Comfort 5000 and up has two remotes not worth the extra money.
When we got the bed together and aired it up to the recommended starting pounds, we began testing which sleep number is right for us. My side ended up a soft 45 and my husband's number is at 55; numbers on the remote range from zero to 100, this was the first night in years; I fell asleep on my side and woke up in the morning in the same position. I woke up feeling refreshed and in less pain. Few people are happy on the same mattress some like it softer or firmer than others having choices is wonderful.
A Precision Comfort Adjustable Foundation is available (like a hospital bed) adjustable at head and foot with a remote control. The foundation has been enhanced so that it fits close to the wall or nightstand. If you have been in a hospital bed, you will understand why this is necessary. How a person who has had surgery can reach, the phone is beyond me!
The regular foundations start out twin size price $249.99 two the King East/Cal $599.99. Foundation legs are also available prices start at $69.99. The Sleep Number 4000 Tradition beds start out at twin size prices $599.99 to King East/Cal at $1,199.99. Remember the pillow top is $200 more.
The foundation covered with a coverlet that matches the mattress. The mattress cover is a rayon/polypropylene Belgian Damask. It feels soft like a satin. The air chamber mattress constructed of natural 24-gauge vulcanized rubber, coated with non-stretch cotton. The instructions state that every chamber is tested to withstand the equivalent of 1,000 pounds of weight and is completely puncture resistant. I sleep with cats as a blanket all contently kneading through out the night. There have been no puncture problems. Though waiting for all the cats to take their nightly bath can be tiresome.
The air chambers are filled with a pump that is not overly noisy controlled with a digital remote that lights up easy to see at night. After a short while when you find your sleep comfort number the pump doesn't even need to be plugged in. We discovered that when I noticed that one of our pets had stepped on the off switch on the surge protector. The bed fills quickly and air is released quickly.
Other uses of the bed, kids love to jump on it. The other use, fill the bed over the 45-sleep number. My side of the bed just doesn't work.
We have found nothing we don't like about the Select Comfort 4000 and have never regretted not getting "a better model." We will never buy a traditional bed again. I doubt that we have to with the 20-year limited warranty that states the product is free from defects in materials and workmanship for a period of 20 years.
The bed can be ordered online, by phone 1-800-344-6561, or store. A store locator can be found on the Select Comfort website.
