Pros: Extremely comfortable, easy to setup, adjustable, two completely separate air chambers.
Cons: Price might shock you at first, may need financing.
UPDATED 1.28.08 - Our bed is JUST AS GREAT as ever! I would recommend this bed to anyone. In all of the years we have had it, we have only had to replace one foam mattress cover due to normal wear.
Now this bed is available for purchase in more places than before. Your shopping and shipping experience can be enriched because of this.
I have no complaints whatsoever and would still tell my closest friends and family to get this bed (or the similar bed to what I purchased). We still use the lightweight down comforter which came with the bed and it is in perfect condition (it was a high quality perk). We enjoy this bed very much. Hopefully this review will be of benefit to you.
Why we needed a new bed: We first decided we needed a new bed because our bed was similar to an egg crate, in which we slid together into a crevasse and clutched onto the sides of the bed all night just to have our own space. We awoke each morning sore and stiff just from all of that effort!
Comparison shopping: We looked at The Original Mattress Factory and we liked the products and prices. We shopped carefully and we even went to the pricey stores, just to make a fair comparison. (I personally think most mattresses feel nice after shopping and being tired and laying on one for a brief time. Hey, toss me a throw blanket and a nice pillow and most of the time I could make a better assessment after a nice nap at the store)! I was pregnant at the time, so I could tell very quickly which mattresses suited me and which did not. At what better point could I try out a bed? My husband also could tell because he knew just what he wanted. He likes a soft mattress and I like a rather firm mattress. We kept it simple while we shopped, so that we only seriously considered what we were willing to spend, compromise on firmness, and quality.
When we got home from shopping: We went home and checked on-line and with friends and family and with different consumer magazines and websites. Select Comfort gave us a VHS videotape to watch and keep (before we made any commitment) which consisted largely of success stories of pleased customers. The video was informative because it explained how their products work. This was a plus because we could watch it at home with no pressure and critique it ourselves, which we like to do with TV anyway. Was it really work the price tag? Read on to see.
What we bought: Our Select Comfort (now called Sleep Number) adjustable firmness sleep system is a king-sized mattress. It is an Ultra Series model. We purchased from a store in the mall and our bed was delivered within 5 business days of purchase, no problem, via UPS.
Why we bought this bed: We had already had three beds, in five years, by the time we decided to buy our Select Comfort bed. No other bed worked and none other seemed it was going to work besides Select Comfort. Every other bed was basically in the same category until we found this.
Setup: Easy to understand and set up the entire sleep system. With two people, set up took around 60 minutes.
90-night sleep trial guarantee: This caught our attention because, even though it would be a hassle to have to send it all back if we did not like it; this guarantee makes sense.
Remote Controls: Remotes are easy to use and lit up so numbers can be read at night. Our remotes have cords and at times the cord could be longer. We had an option to buy more expensive cordless remotes, which we turned down. It is not very often that the cords are frustrating.
Sleep: Huge improvement from standard beds. Better quality sleep, individualized control and ability to adjust mattress firmness at any time. We both sleep all night and wake up feeling rested. My back, neck and head feel so much better with this bed than I could have hoped. Optional support pillows available for purchase may add to better sleep for some. It has not been a problem for me.
Bedding: This bed is literally almost as light as air. I have a bad back and neck and I can easily make this bed without groaning as I do so. I can easily lift up the corners and slip the fitted sheets on in a snap. This bed does not require special bedding and all of my sheets fit nicely around the corners. No bedding that I have pops off, which can happen with some beds. It is so frustrating when that happens, is it not? I love it that this bed is so easy to make and stays made.
Durability: This bed is durable. I have two children who have played on the bed. Mine are not wild kids, so please do not misunderstand. The bed is not for the faint hearted; it is durable. A friend of mine was considering buying a Sleep Number bed and was afraid their cat would scratch it and pop their bed - I do not think that is a concern at all. Just do not be afraid to buy a bed with air chambers because of its durability. It is better to ask questions if you are not sure, so you do not miss out on something this good.
Warranty: Limited Warranty (up to 5 year warranty, manufacturer responsible for 100% of price for repair/replacement - customer responsible for less than 5% per year from original purchase date). There was no cost for the warranty.
Portable Bed: Should you ever need this feature. Sales personnel informed us that some of their customers insisted on transporting their Select Comfort sleep systems whenever and most wherever they traveled. I am not sure about this, but Im sure some would try it. I have two small children, so on a trip my mind is on other things, and transporting my bed is not one of them. I do look forward to getting back home to it though! The entire thing is portable and the air chambers work when plugged into a 110v outlet.
Freebies: Our purchase included a lightweight down comforter and standard pillows. The goose down blanket comforter is fabulous and I still use it every winter. It is lightweight and not quite a comforter, although I prefer this myself. Nicely trimmed in satin and pretty pattern but difficult to keep clean. I would recommend a duvet if this item would receive a lot of exposure. The standard size pillows are nothing to brag about. The kids use them on their beds.
We love our bed. We say this all of the time, to everyone, even ourselves. Needless to say, our old bed is now a guest bed. I am so glad I dont have to make that bed every day. I feel so much more free! I never want another bed.
I hope this review was helpful to you.
