Chris_Billings's Full Review: Senjaku Karafuru Fruit Soda Hard Candy
One of the most interesting Japanese candies I have tried would have to be the Senjaku Fruit Soda Candy. The candies are the approximate size and appearance of a two-toned marble with a small hole that goes into the center of the candy. Each candy is filled with a powdery mixture and when your saliva enters the hole, it starts to fix a little bit. The hard candy is actually made of two individual pieces joined together. You also have the choice of crunching the candy in half releasing the powder creating an extreme explosion of fizz. At times the flavor being released is super sour, especially the Green Apple flavor. The pack is made up of individually wrapped candies in 4 flavors along with a 5th "bonus" flavor. I'm not able to read Japanese too well, but the 4 main flavors are Strawberry, Pineapple, Green Apple, and Grape. The fifth flavor at times tastes like Grapefruit, sometimes like Peach, and other times like Fruit/Tropical Punch.
The various flavors all taste great and taste exactly how they are suppose to. The manufacturer used natural flavoring and organic ingredients in the creation of this candy. The Grape and Pineapple are my favorite flavors along with the "Mystery Flavor". The center of the Green Apple flavored candy is sour and does burn the tongue after eating too many.
There are not a lot of stores that sell imported Japanese candy, but you can find a few online. I ordered a pack of candy for about $2.99 from Amazon.com, which was a pretty good buy because the normal price on a pack of this candy is around $7.99 for a pack containing approximately 25 to 30 pieces.
If you want to try a candy that's different than the average treat, find a pack of Senjaku Fruit Soda Candy and experience it for yourself. I've never had anything made domestically like this before, so I really can't compare it to anything else. I single serving (5 pieces) only has 7g of Sugar (14g total carbs) so it's a smart choice if you want a sweet treat with a small amount of sugar. And of course the candy is fat free.
