veka's Full Review: Sennheiser HD 212Pro Professional Headphones
When considering buying these headphones remember that they are closed headphones. This means that there will be no airflow by your ears and can get quite warm in there. If you plan to use headphones for prolonged time out in higher temperatures you might want to consider open or a street style headphones. Also remember these are DJ headphones, this means it will have a long cord and will be more bulky since they arent really meant to be portable. You can use them for portable devices, I do, but it wont be as convenient as headphones specifically meant to be portable. Keep these in mind because I wont mention them, as cons to the headphones as it would be unfair to fault a closed headphone for not being an open headphone. Each headphone is made with a specific purpose or two in mind. It is you that has to decide which purpose you require.
With that said onto the review:
These are the most comfortable headphones I have used. They are lightweight and fit well. The 212s have leatherette padding for the top of your head. Not only does this help prevent irritating your scalp but it also makes the headphones fit better. Because of the padding, the headphones dont slip around on your head under normal movements. Every headphone I have used without this padding up top slips after very little movement. These headphones dont put your head in a death grip to stay on. The ear cups are medium sized and they are supraaural which means they sit on your ear.
These headphones are supposed to be DJ design. Now I dont know exactly what all qualifies a headphone as DJ headphones but most DJ designs I have seen have the reversible ear cups. I work in radio, which is a little different than a club/party DJ, but it seems to me that the reason one would want to listen to only one cup is not so you dont mess up your hair, but so that you can check your audio. And when checking you usually need to be able to throw the headphones on quickly. Not fiddle with it to reattach the cup. However, the removable ear cup would be nice for two people to listen to the same thing without getting another set of headphones out or something similar. If it had the reversible ear cups, I would have used it many times but I have yet to see a reason to be worth unattaching the ear cup.
My knowledge of music isnt super great. My experience with headphones has been with $20 Sony headphones, countless lower end DJ headphones that arent known for superior sound quality and the Sennheiser 202s. I do work in radio but it is talk radio so my experience with music is not on a professional level.
When my headphones finally arrived I tried several CDs of different styles .I was immediately I decided to step up form the 202s. I was impressed with the overall sound. The bass was strong, crisp and clear. The midtones were more pronounced than in any headphone I had ever listened to before. The treble wasnt tinny. My personal preference is to have fairly strong bass and strong midtones. I listen to Punk/Emo, Hardcore, Classical, and Euro Rock. Most of these styles arent particularly strong in the bass so the 212s plays the music very nicely and gives the alternate music a much more live-at-the-concert sound than any other headphone I have used. Honestly, I cant remember how classical sounds on the 212s (and since my headphones were stolen I cant take some time to find out). If you like pop, country and adult contemporary styles these headphones may not be for you. I just am not sure that the way the 212s play the music would be appreciated by such fans as much as Rock and Rap fans. Though pop would probably depend on which artists you liked.
The headphones band is made of a durable yet slightly flexible plastic. The connection to the ear cups seems more fragile than many headphones. If you have troubles with headphones breaking at the connection to the phones you may not want these. But I have never had troubles with any headphones breaking. A year and a half ago work bought five 202s which have the same design to the band and none of them have broke. The connection to the ear cups pivot just a little bit which help them to fit your head better. The earcups move up and down the band for a wide variety of head sizes. I have a small head which makes finding headphones that fit fairly hard but these fit perfectly when I put them on the 2nd to the smallest setting. If you have finished growing they should fit you. The largest setting looks slightly larger than most DJ headphones I have seen.
The Cord is 10ft long and medium sized. The length is perfect for computers and other desk equipment that connect a fair distance from your head and need some room to be able to look around easily. For Portable devices the cord is a tripping hazard but if you wind up the cord to the perfect length you can take black twist ties you get in electronics which will blend in and if you use three they wouldnt come undone even with months of use. The Plug is a 1/8th inch (3.5mm) plug and they come with a 1/4th inch (6.3mm) adapter. The adapter is a heavy-duty feeling metal. It snaps on firmly yet still comes off easily.
If I had to buy headphones again would I buy the Sennheiser 212 pro?
Yes I would. And since mine were stolen I will indeed buy them again as soon as I save up enough money after getting a car alarm.
