bikehorn's Full Review: Sennheiser HD 457 Consumer Headphones
after suffering through weak earbuds and poor-sounding headphones for years, i decided enough was enough. i figured i used a very nice pair of headphones when i mixed live music for different bands, why not have a pair for use with my CD player/TV/whatever? i bit the bullet and picked them up at my local Radioshack when i went over to grab a few miscellaneous electronic parts. being a bass player, i wanted REAL bass response, not tinny garbage. i gave these a quick listen against the rest of the headphones in the store and picked them out, took them home and promptly fired them up. i had become accustomed to the excessive sibilance of cheap headphones and suddenly began to wonder where all the treble had gone. the change was akin to tasting something tangy or spicy after having eaten sweet candy for a long time. my ears soon got used to it and i realised that there was only as much treble as was necessary. this resulted in a very smooth response that for a change did not hurt my ears! suddenly there was plenty of bass, and not only that, the bass was clear! obviously, these things can't touch the best Beyerdynamics or Sennheiser's own high end headphones, but i don't want to walk around with a $500 pair of Grado headphones plugged into my iPod. while they are not expressly designed to block out outside noise, they do a decent job of it anyway and rest comfortably on my head and over my ears. the three-metre cord is great for watching TV or movies late at night, or better yet playing my Xbox without waking others up. the one gripe i have is that the cord is kind of thin, perhaps signal loss would be reduced had Sennheiser spent a bit more and gotten a thicker cable. while they were at it i'd have asked for a curly cable too, i don't enjoy having to wrap the cord around the little plastic clip-spindle either. in any case, they are a great investment for what they are, and they are well built to withstand everyday use.
