Pros: Great for rinsing and storing contact lenses, thimerosal free formula.
Cons: Will not clean lenses, strictly a rinse and storage type product.
After the incident with the Clorox Lemon Fresh Bleach. I should have known better than to ask Chris to pick up a bottle of contact lens cleaner for me. But in his defense, there are a ton of different products from Bausch & Lomb and even I get confused when trying to find the correct product when I am in a hurry. I had about two squirts left of the Bausch & Lomb ReNu and asked him to pick up a bottle for me. When he tossed me the bag I didnt even look at the wording on the box, I saw the B&L logo and ripped it open. It wasnt until two or three days later that I started to check out the bottle; for some strange reason my contacts felt worse rather than better. Anyone who wears contact lenses will tell you theres nothing worse than having the gritty feeling or calcium deposits on the lens. Thats when I realized he picked up a saline solution instead of a multi purpose liquid.
Bausch & Lomb Sensitive Eyes Plus Saline Solution
As I said, this was picked up accidentally. If I had looked closer at the box and seen that it was a saline solution and not a multi purpose liquid, chances are I would have returned it and exchanged it for another Bausch & Lomb product. Outside of using this to rinse lenses after disinfecting them and keeping on hand in case of an emergency [running out] I cant really see this having a tremendous amount of perks to it. It is thimerosal free and buffered so those with sensitive eyes wont experience as much discomfort with this over other similar products but this wont help to remove deposits, protein build up or for daily cleaning. Yes, it can be used as a rinsing agent but at $2.49 a pop, you are better off investing in one of the multi purpose sensitive eyes products.
The bottle is the same as all of the other Bausch & Lomb eye care products, the strap that connects the cap to the bottle is strong and sturdy and unless you are the Incredible Hulk, chances are youll never have a problem with it breaking off. Its small size makes it easy to squeeze and work with, even when your hands are wet or you are trying to do three things at once. The safety band around the neck was pretty hard to open since this is a smaller sized bottle than I am used to but its there to protect against tampering so its a necessary evil. The box was recently redesigned as well as the label on the bottle so if you are a casual user of this, dont freak out when you go to look for it and dont spot it immediately.
If you do have sensitive eyes you might want to check with your eye doctor before switching to this from another product and have had allergic reactions in the past. Even though this is thimerosal free, it does contain other agents that may irritate your eyes. There is a product information sheet enclosed inside the box as well as precautions printed on the inside of the box so make sure that you read these and become familiar with them before you use this product. I glanced over them and they seem to be the standard warnings and when I used this I didnt have any issues with it. This wont be something that I will use on a regular basis and more than likely it will get tossed into my gym bag so I can rinse my lenses after a work out. Be sure to look for the coupon for a free trial pair of Bausch & Lomb 2 Week Contact Lens pack, this is printed on the back side of the product information sheet and can be redeemed at your local eye care center for a free pair, try them out and see if they are right for you.
The Bottom Line
While the small size of the bottle makes it great for tucking in a gym bag, purse or knapsack you are limited to what you can do with this saline solution. Its great for storing lenses or when you need to rinse them but for about the same price you can get a multi purpose [cleaning, rinsing, storage] liquid. Since this was purchased accidentally and I had opened the box I couldnt return it or exchange it for the multi purpose liquid so I am sort of stuck with it. I have no doubt that Ill be able to make use of it before the June 2005 expiration date but it will be strictly as an emergency rinse aid or to help dissolve enzyme tablets. This will also come in handy when my eyes are a little sore or need a break from the regular solutions I use to clean and store them and since its a sensitive formulation I know I can count in it to help soothe my eyes when I need to rinse them and put them back in.
