merlot's Full Review: September 12th: We Knew Everything Would Be All Ri...
Recently I had the pleasure of helping out at the Scholastic Book Fair at my daughters school. While there another mom pointed out a section of books that were written by children. September 12th We Knew Everything Would Be All Right was one of those books.
September 12th was written by first-grade students at H. Byron Masterson Elementary in Kennett, Missouri. These kids did an amazing job of conveying their feelings.
The Story September 12th is about how these kids felt the day after the Terrorist Attacks of September 11th.
"On September 11, 2001 many bad things happened.
September 12th was a new day. We knew everything would be all right.
because.....the sun came up and the birds started to sing again."
The rest of the book is pretty much the same thing. It goes throughout the kids day on September 12th, and the everyday ordinary things that were still continuing in their lives. These everyday occurrences were what let these kids know everything would be all right.
The Illustrations
The Illustrations in this book are very bright and colorful. They are crayon drawings drawn by these same first-grade authors. There are pictures of the World Trade Center on fire, pictures of the planes hitting the towers, pictures of the birds singing again, and pictures of Mom and Dad tucking their kids in each night.
The pictures are exactly what you would expect from a first-grade level. They follow the story very well and since it's a book written by kids, are extremely necessary in this book. All of the pictures depict their actions during September 12th and use lots of color.
My Feelings
We all tried to protect our kids from the horrible images of September 11, 2001. My daughter was in Kindergarten at that time and I didn't want to explain to her that people intentionally comitted this heinous act. She was too little to have to think about that. Now, one year later, despite all our attempts to shelter her, she has learned a great deal about what went on that day.
A book like September 12th We Knew Everything Would Be All Right can help kids understand that life will be normal again. This book does not go into detail about what happened. There are 2 pages that show the tradegy and 24 pages that show kids that everything will be all right! The fact that it's written by children the same age that my daughter is is a big plus. She loves that this is written by kids just like her.
I recommend this book. It has a very positive message in it that life will be okay. It conveys the message that we need to go on with our lives and not let people stop us from living. This isn't just a great book for kids, it's a great book for parents. We all feel sad and hopeless sometimes when we remember that day, this book lets us know it's okay.
The kids dedicated this book to their parents:
We like to feel secure and safe. Somedays, the rut is the best place to be.
