Pros:Loads of fun, easy to learn, can involve a lot of strategy, no age restrictions

Cons:it can become addictive

The Bottom Line: Sequence is a great game that can help build on your skills of reasoning, and can also be a fun way to learn strategy.

Sequence a board game using cards, that can be as basic as any game, yet can involve strategy as complex as chess depending on the players. This is a relatively new game to my circle of friends, yet it is one that once you start playing, you become addicted to. If you have ever played the game Connect 4, that is a good premise to picture when thinking of the structure of this game. The objective in this one though, is to get 5 markers in a row to build a "sequence". Completing sequences leads to winning the game, and seems an easy objective, but can become tough if you are playing a seasoned pro.

The Object

Complete of connected series of five of the same colored chip either up or down, across or diagonally on the playing surface.

The Game Pieces

The Game Board
104 Sequence Cards (or 2 decks of cards)
50 green Marker Chips
50 blue Marker Chips
35 red Marker Chips -- these are only used for a 3rd player or team.

Each player or team is assigned a color and the cut is made to determine who goes first, with the lowest card determining that. The board is set up so that there is room on the sides for players to have a draw pile and a discard pile for each of the players. Then, the cards are dealt out according to how many players are there. For 2 players it is 7 cards each, and for 3 o4 4 players it is 6 cards each.

Beginning Play

The first player to the left of the dealer selects a card from their hand that corresponds to a card that is shown on the board. The board itself is covered with a 10x10 square with columns and rows of pictures of the cards in the deck placed randomly on the board. Every card is represented twice, except for jacks. The first player selects which card they want to play, they discard it, and place a marker on the board that marks that spot. A player can play on either one of the card spaces as long as it is not already covered by another marker chip. Once a marker chip has been played, it cannot be removed by an opponent except when using a one-eyed Jack.

Special rules with Jacks

The game contains 8 Jacks, with 4 of them having two-eyes. These "two-eyed" jacks are wild. Upon playing them, you can place a marker anywhere on the board that is unoccupied. The "one-eyed" jacks are a little more tricky, in that when you play one, you take a marker off the board from any place. This means, that you can take a marker from your opponent off the board at this time. It ends up serving as a great strategic move when you have learned the game well. One thing though, you cannot remove a marker chip that is already part of a completed sequence. The jacks can also only be played during your turn.

Dead Cards

Sometimes during the game, spaces corresponding to the cards in your hand can be covered by opponents using their wild jacks. If you hold a card in your hand which does not have an open space on the game board because both spaces representing that card are covered by a marker chip, you are holding a dead card, and you may turn it in for a new card. It does not take away any of your turns, and can also be used to your advantage strategically after you have learned the basic rules.

Ins and Outs of the Game

Once you have played your turn and placed your marker chip on the game board, you then take a card from the draw deck. If the next player plays before you end up drawing a replacement card, you lose to right to have one. This can lead to a disadvantage if you are left with fewer cards in your hand.

When all cards have been taken from the draw piles, and the game is still going, then the discard piles are just reshuffled and put back into play.

As I said earlier, you are trying to complete sequences, but once you have a sequence on the board, it cannot be touched by an opponent. It is in reality frozen to that spot. Use this also to your advantage when you become a pro.

Sequence is a very fun game that can be accommodating to people of all ages. It is basically a matching game, that even the youngest person can learn, but when you have competitive adults playing it, it can become extremely strategic at every turn. This is one of those games that does not get boring with each turn either, instead becoming something where you think you can do better if you play just one more game. Those words will be stuck in your mind if you play this.... "just one more game." I highly recommend this game to anyone that likes board games or card games. Not only that, but I recommend this to anyone that likes competition, because this is a safe, and cool way to carry it out.

If you are interested, you can find this game at any major toy store, or most stores of the Walmart / Shopko type. I purchased mine for $14.99 at our local Shopko, and I am very happy with my purchase. One thing to watch out for is losing some of the markers, but I think that if you lost a lot of them, that they could be replaced with coins. This is a really fun game, and I urge you to give it a try if you have not yet done so.
