| stacyb's Full Review: Sequence Game |
While visiting family last weekend, I was introduced to the game "Sequence". We're lovers of board games, so anytime we're introduced to a new one I'm eager to try! This was great! Even my 8 year old caught on quickly!
You have a board with rows of cards (in no particular order). There are 100 tiles on the board (10 x 10), 96 are filled with cards from 2 decks and 4 "free" spaces in the corners. All cards but the Jacks are included. There are 3 sets of chips that you play with. You can play teams or individuals.
Let's say you are playing with 3 individuals...each person gets 6 cards. The player to the left of the dealer goes first. Since the cards are in no particular order on the board, you really can't sort your hand according to number or suit (like in Rummy or other card games). You actually have to study the board to figure out which play would work the best with what you have in your hand. Each person has different color chips. Each person plays one chip at a time and decides where to play his chips...strategically to your advantage or to block the other player from getting 5 of their chips in a row (diagonally, horizontally, or vertically). You may place a chip on a card that matches one in your hand. You then discard that card and draw another. If you forget to draw another by the time the next person's turn is over, you don't get to draw that round. Thus, leaving you one card shorter than you were to start with FOR THE REST OF THE GAME! So you have to keep on your toes at all times.
There are 8 jacks. The one eyed jacks can remove another player's chip from any spot you choose. The two eyed jacks are wild cards and you can place your chip on any card on the board that is empty. Use your jacks wisely...only when trying to block an opponent or in one of your last moves to win the game.
Since there are only 2 of each card on the board AND you can use the wild card anywhere you choose, occasionally there will be a card that you have that will be a "dead card". If this happens you can justify that you cannot play the card in your hand and may discard it and draw another on your turn.
The games really go pretty fast and it's pretty addictive. Why I say that it's an "on the edge of your seat game" is because you never know when someone is going to throw that winning card (almost as mysterious as gin rummy).
Some variations of the game...If you play with only two players then you each get 7 cards to start with but have to form 2 rows of 5 instead of 1 row to win the game. You may also play as teams of two. Instead of both of you deciding what to play though, each person on the team has their own hand of cards but you can't see each other's cards (like Spades). You still work together to get one row to win.
Like I said before, not only is it a fun game but a great family game. My 8 year old loved it! We play a lot of board games as a family. I think in this modern time of technology, too little time is spent on board games and other fun family activities. If you haven't already, introduce your kids to card and board games. My kids love them! My husband and I really enjoy playing the board games with them too.
Enjoy! Thanks for reading!
