Definitely save room for dessert at this ice cream heaven. Their ice cream sundaes are more like ice cream creations. It is not just the size of the desserts that make them remarkable, but the quality as well. We usually get a frozen hot chocolate as an appetizer before our real dessert comes. All of the sundaes are good, but here are my favorites: The Forbidden Broadway Sundae is a piece of blackout cake, piled high with ice cream and smothered in hot fudge. The MMMM Sundae is ice cream, bananas, peanut butter, marshmallow, hot fudge and whipped cream. The Banana Split is enough for 4 and is made up of every imaginable ice cream topping. You could try the cowards portion if you think the regular would be too much.
If you are not in an ice cream mood, the You Do Fon Du is also really good with assorted fruit and hot fudge to dip. The cheesecake is also good, with fresh strawberries.
I have been going to Serendipity for at least 15 years and it only gets better. I don't recommend going for the food, although the hamburgers and sandwiches are okay. One sandwich that I would recommend is the Catcher in the Rye, which is a BLT with turkey, but ask for another piece of bread (it comes open faced and is hard to eat). The french fries are also decent, and do not come with the hamburger.
Remember on your way out to pick up the packets of frozen hot chocolate mix to take home. They are really easy to make and taste almost as good as the real thing.
A key thing to remember is that there is usually a wait, but they do accept reservations for dinner only. I recommend going at off hours, and only for dessert. The waiting area is also a gift shop where they have unique gifts, some for children and some for adults only. The kids will like the mound of beanie babies they have for sale. Enjoy!
