| AliventiAsylum's Full Review: Sergeant's Gold Flea and Tick Squeeze-On for Dogs ... |
I have two dogs at my house. One is mine, and the other is one Ive sort of inherited. He is supposed to be taken care of by his real owner, but that doesnt always happen. I take care of him as much as I can, although Im not quite as invested in his care as I am my dog.
Ive always used a flea and tick product on my dog, specifically K-9 Advantix. With a bad flea and tick season upon us, I couldnt let the other dog suffer when we were pulling ticks off of him daily. I went to the local discount store looking for shampoo and powder. When I spotted Sergeants Gold Flea and Tick Squeeze-On for about the same price I was willing to spend on powder and shampoo, I decided to give it a try. What did I have to lose?
The product goes by weight, and I know both of the dogs are well over 61 pounds, so it was easy to choose which product would be right for us. It didnt matter if the dog already had any fleas or ticks, as Sergeants Gold Flea and Tick Squeeze-On is designed to begin killing fleas in as little as an hour after applying it. Ticks start dying in about three hours. Not only does it kill adult fleas, but it claims to also acts as a preventative against flea eggs and larvae for up to nine weeks. Its also supposed to act as a deterrent against mosquitoes, another issue we have had this year.
The product is easy to dispense. Its in a plastic tube that is thin at the top. I cut it with scissors across the top, which leaves a little opening with which to squeeze out the product. The tip is flat, however, which helps a lot with getting the product right down onto the dogs skin, rather than ending up mostly on his coat. I do notice that his coat looks greasy where I have applied the product. Its almost as if someone has dribbled baby oil on him. I always have to caution the kids against petting him, usually for about the first 24 hours.
Dogs can be bathed 24 hours after Sergeants Gold Flea and Tick Squeeze-On has been applied. I usually try to bathe them before I apply it, just so I know the product is on there being absorbed.
Since I started applying this the middle of May this year, the dog hasnt had a tick on him. That says a lot, going from at least one tick a day to none. There have been no fleas coming off the dog, either, although Im not sure that was a concern. There were a lot of mosquitoes around and it seemed to bother this dog, and now it doesnt seem to be, so I have to say it had been effective. This actually surprised me as I was sure something that was as inexpensive as this is - especially compared to K-9 Advantix - wouldnt be all that effective.
The active ingredients in Sergeants Gold Flea and Tick Squeeze-On are cyphenothrin and pyripoxyfen, This product can be dangerous if not used properly. It should never be used on cats or dogs weighing less than the dosage is designed for. Immediately after applying this I wash my hands, even if I dont think Ive gotten anything on me. There are a lot of first aid advisories on the box, and I suggest being quite cautious.
Sergeants advises using this year-round for best results. I dont - I usually stop in October and begin again in April and havent had an issue with effectiveness with any flea and tick product that Ive used. It comes in a package with a three month supply for about $12. That makes it affordable for just about anyone to prevent fleas and ticks from infesting their dogs, and possibly their home.
Would I switch over to using Sergeants Gold Flea and Tick Squeeze-On on my dog? Thats a tough one. He has long, shaggy fur and seeing ticks on him is difficult if not impossible. I think if I get through another season without seeing ticks on the short, black-haired dog Im using it on I would do it and save the money. However, if other flea and tick products are out of your price range, I highly recommend giving this product a try. Its about 1/3 the cost of other flea and tick products and seems to be just as effective.
