| marislet's Full Review: Sesame Street - Elmo's Talking Driver |
I found this at Target and just had to bring it home for my daughter's first birthday. She is a huge Sesame Street fan and loves anything that makes a lot of noise. While Elmo's Talking Driver is noisy, it's not overwhelming. This has got to be one of the cutest toys I've seen.
The Toy
Elmo's Talking Driver is quite small, so it's not going to take up a whole lot of room in your toy. That's if it ever stays in the toy box! I know ours doesn't stay idle for very long! It is also made of durable plastic that is easy to clean and handles abuse rather well. The talking driver does require batteries. We've had the toy for 8 months now and haven't had to replace them yet.
The driver console sports a bright yellow steering wheel that turns. The horn is blue and has a raised picture of Elmo's face on it. Pressing on the horn causes your child to hear Elmo saying "Beep, beep, coming through".
Attached to the steering wheel is the turn signal. I would have expected the green to be primary green, but it's a more subtle green. Pulling on the turn signal produces a bell sound and causes both the red and blue arrows above the steering wheel to flash.
To the right of the steering wheel is the dashboard console. At the top is a long yellow button with 2 musical notes on it and the Sesame Street logo. Pushing the button causes music to play for 5 seconds.
Under the yellow music button are three square buttons. Pushing the red button with Big Bird's face results in Big Bird telling you to "Buckle Up". Pushing the middle yellow button with Cookie Monster's face results in Cookie Monster saying "Me Drive Car". Pushing the third and final button with Ernie's face on it produced Ernie saying "Driving Is Fun".
Below the 3 buttons is the speaker which is halfway hidden under the steering wheel. To the right of the speaker is a bright red stick shift. Pulling on the stick shift produces a revving noise.
Last, but not least, below the stick shift is a bright blue "key". Turning the key produces a sound as if your child were actually starting a car.
Lessons
Elmo's Talking Driver helps to teach our little ones about cause and effect. They don't even realize they are learning. They learn to push and pull and turn. They also learn what button makes what noise.
The bad
I only really have 1 problem with this toy. While Cookie Monster saying "Me Drive Car" is cute and all, it teaches poor grammar. Any parent who believes their little one isn't picking up the bad grammar is fooling themselves.
Recommendations
My daughter is 18 months and still enjoys playing with this toy. Her 3 year old sister also enjoys playing with this toy. After all, Elmo, Big Bird, Cookie Monster, and Ernie all talk to her! I'd highly recommend this toy for infants anywhere from 9 to 18 months. Mom and Dad, you aren't going to get a headache from this toy.
