"It’s the Muppet Show. YEEAAAHHHH!!!"
"Its time to play the music,
Its time to light the lights
Its time to meet the Muppets on the Muppet Show Tonight"
Sorry about that got caught up in a childhood memory. The image of Kermit the Frog excitedly announcing the guest star at the beginning of each Muppet Show will always be a fond memory from my childhood. I can still remember curling up on the couch next to my parents in my PJs singing along with the cast. And who can forget Kermit’s stints on Sesame Street? “Hi-Ho. Kermit the Frog here,” was his signature as the roving reporter, decked out in his trench coat and reporter’s hat. Now a whole new generation is growing up loving Kermit the Frog, and is playing with Magic Talking Kermit the Frog.
One of my workmates’ daughter received Kermit for her birthday and she recently brought it into work. I think her reasoning behind bringing it in was to vindicate herself from all of the odd stares that she was receiving every time she said “Hi Ho” to someone. Either that or she was getting lonely at her desk and knew that I wouldn’t be able to resist playing with this doll! I wasn’t the only one who fell in love with this talking frog though. Two of the women in my office stopped by at various points with their young daughters, one age 10 the other 2. After seeing how much the two children loved this doll, several of my other co-workers decided to buy it for friends and family.
At first glance, Kermit doesn’t look much different from the Kermit doll that I carried around in my toddler years. Not much you can do to change that classic green frog. The fabric that Kermit is made out of has changed. The Kermit that I carried around was made of a scratchy, dull material that reminded me of the felt scraps that we glued to paper in kindergarten. The new improved Kermit is made of a softer, shinier fabric. The fabric reminds me of something that you would find on a baby’s first toy, soft, shiny but not too fuzzy. The general construction is rather durable. However the one concern that I would have in this area could be that the moving parts could bust rather easily if Kermit is accidentally stepped on or played with too rough.
But what child cares about the durability or the type of fabric used in construction? They want fun right? Well, this toy provides plenty of it. As the name Magic Talking Kermit implies this doll talks and not only that, he sing too. And that’s not all you get, his mouth can move to the words! (Ok, enough of sounding like an infomercial.) There are five spots on Kermit’s body that make him talk. The first being his left foot. When you squeeze it, Kermit starts into his monologue of “Hi-Ho, Kermit the Frog here.” Then invites you to sing with him about being a Caribbean amphibian. When he’s done he ribbits. What child (or adult!) could resist that? Well that’s not all! (Sorry I couldn’t help myself) If you squeeze Kermit’s tummy he goes into the same montage, but the trick this time is that you have to keep squeezing his stomach in and out for him to continue. Why you might ask? Because as you squeeze Kermit’s stomach in and out his mouth is opening and closing making it appear that the doll is actually singing.
The next two places that activate Kermit are his two hands. One makes Kermit ribbit; the other produces the noises of a buzzing fly. Again, Kermit’s stomach comes into play. If you squeeze his stomach while the fly is buzzing, it sounds like Kermit caught the fly and ate him. After I discovered this I began wandering around the office showing everybody my new trick. (I think HR is already on its way to my office to suggest that I might be working too hard.)
Ok, foot, tummy, two hands…. that makes 4 places. Oh, yes, and his mouth. It took me a little while longer to find this one. If you squeeze Kermit’s mouth shut, it sounds like his trying to talk but can’t. If you do it while he’s singing, he’ll hum to the music instead.
Ok, so now that I’ve expounded on the wonderful qualities of this toy I feel the obligation to mention the downside as well. The first being what I mentioned before, the durability. Electronic toys, I have learned from past experience have a high rate of finding an early demise. Although, in my opinion, this could be due to the second negative aspect to this toy, a high irritability factor. What parent, and it really doesn’t matter what level of saint they have attained, want’s to hear Kermit 24/7? But as long as it’s kept under control, this is a great toy.
