| dandj's Full Review: Sesame Street - Teach Me Elmo |
Who's red with big googly eyes, a round orange nose and that undeniably adorable voice? Why, it's Elmo, of course. And this Elmo is here to help us teach our children the different parts of their body.
He's wearing a long-sleeved yellow shirt with a mock turtleneck under an aqua-colored jumper which is covered with the words tummy, nose, foot, mouth, and hand. These words are indicative of those that Elmo speaks.
The clothing is not separate from him, it is actually sewn in as part of the body. On his back is a long velcro closure which holds the speaker and casing for the 3AA batteries. You will need a small Phillips screwdriver to replace the batteries.
Elmo is plush, so not only can he teach, but he can also be cuddled. Squeeze his nose, and he will say "nose". Squeeze either of his hands, and he says, "hand". The same is true of his tummy and each foot. However, press on his mouth and he says "mouth", then gives a kiss.
He is absolutely one of the cutest teaching tools I have come across, but there are a few points I would prefer to be different.
1. The eyes stand out from the face just as nicely as his nose, so I really think they should also cause him to speak when pressed. But, unfortunately, eyes are not in this Elmo's vocabulary.
2. Each hand and foot should specify which side...left or right, to further the child's education. When I am putting my son's socks or shoes on, I will say, "left foot" or "right foot". I do the same for each leg when putting on his pants and each arm when helping him with his shirt or jacket. (Arms and legs however, are also lacking from Elmo's tutorial.)
3. The mouth was sometimes hard for my son to press when he was younger. I am unsure of the reason...it could be the button inside is sewn in crooked or there is too much stuffing between it and Elmo's exterior layer.
4. The speaker/battery casing is not especially easy to get in or out, but this is not completely a negative aspect. It does prevent the small children being able to remove it.
This is simply a list as to what I personally felt could be improved on Elmo. He is useful, educational and cuddly soft. However the enjoyment potential was low with my son. He much preferred to use himself, momma, and daddy to learn on. He liked "the works"...eyes, ears, nose, mouth, cheeks, chin and so on.
