alhena's Full Review: Set Enterprises Quiddler Card Game by Set Enterpri...
Let me just get started by saying that I am not a big fan of word games. I don't think I've ever won a game of boggle or scrabble, ever. But I've won Quiddler!
Quiddler is a card game. Each card has a letter and a point value on it. Some cards have two letter combinations on them, like qu or th. To play the game, you need to make words out of your cards, using a minimum of two cards to make a word. Score is figured out by the point value on the cards.
The game is played in seven rounds. For the first round everyone is dealt three cards. On your turn you can either take a card from the discard pile or take a new card. Then you discard a card. Play continues like this until someone can make words out of all of their letters. At that point, that person will lay his cards down. Then, all of the remaining players get one more turn to use up their cards in words.
You get the points on your cards, minus any cards you couldn't use. There's also a 10 point bonus for the person who made the most words, and a 10 point bonus for the person who made the longest word.
The second round is 4 cards, then 5, then 6, up to the last round which is ten cards.
So, in the second round, if I had the letters "C" "A" "T" and "S" I could play one word, CATS, and get the 8 points for C, 2 points for A, 3 points for T, and 3 points for S, for a total of 16 points. If my opponent had the letters "A" "T" "B" and "E" he could make two words, AT and BE - and get the points - 2 for A, 3 for T, 8 for B and 2 for E, for a total of 15 points. Since my word "CATS" is four letters I'd get a ten point bonus for longest word. My opponent would get a ten point bonus for having the most words. With three or four players the bonuses become very important!
One of the things I like about this game is the strategy is as important as being able to make words. Are you going to go out early and stick your opponent with a bunch of cards that they probably can't use? Or are you going to hold on to your high point cards and try to make a really great bunch of words?
The cards themselves are beautiful. They're based on celtic era drawings of letters and you really need to see them to appreciate how pretty they are.
The game says it's for ages 8 and up, 2-8 players. A game lasts about 20 to 40 minutes, depending on how many players you have and how long you let them sit on a hand before yelling at them to play already! I've lost this game to a kid of 10 years old, so like I said, you don't have to have a super vocabulary to win this game. Strategy and luck have a lot to do with it.
In conclusion: I love this game. It's fun, fast paced, and easy to learn.
