| zzJulia's Full Review: Seventh Generation Chlorine Free Diapers, Newborn |
At some point in my pregnancy, I seriously considered utilizing a cloth diapering service. There is an excellent local service here called Tiny Tots and another mom I knew had a good experience with them.
However, by the time I got home with a newborn, I was grateful for the Pampers Swaddlers that the hospital had sent me home with, as well as the other Pampers and Huggies that I had stocked up on a few weeks before the delivery.
By the time I was coherent enough to investigate the cloth diaper service again, I was overwhelmed with the further paraphernelia that I would need to purchase, liners, covers, a diaper bucket, etc. that I gave up. Since I was returning to work in 8 weeks, I could not expect that the daycare situation or nanny would continue with cloth diapering to make such an investment worthwhile.
The Main Diaper Contenders
Pampers Swaddlers Newborn size were fantastic up until he hit 10 lbs. After that, the size 1 was disappointing in fit. We switched to Huggies Baby Shaped with Gigglastic waistband for size 1. While the Huggies Baby Shaped (I think that is the new marketing name for "Ultra-Trim") fit well and had elastic in the back which Pampers did not have, once our son passed 12 lbs and started consuming a lot more--they lacked enough absorbency for him.
Seventh Generation
They are considered to be earth-friendlier, but since they still have the gel for absorbency, they are not as environmentally friendly as the Tushies brand diapers.
The main reason I purchased the Seventh Generation was that all the reviews I had read on Drugstore.com and Amazon indicated that they absorbed more. Sort of the Bounty of diapers, if you will.
Benefits
The diapers are chlorine free, and thus gentler on your baby's skin. If your child is prone to diaper rash, this diaper should be an alternative to consider. Because they are chlorine free, they are brown in color, which is not a big deal.
The absorbency claims held true for us, and these diapers can be safely used for an overnight if only our child would sleep that long.
Like Huggies, they have elastic legs and resealable tabs. I have had no problems with the tabs adhering to baby's skin as they are not sticky, just velcro-like.
Some Considerations
Sizing with these diapers is difficult. They are a full inch and a half wider in the crotch than Huggies Baby Shaped and for that reason, we still do not use them all the time as they splay out our son's legs.
The small size is indicated for weight 8 to 14 lbs, but that is preposterous as the small only fit our son once he passed 12 lbs. It's quite likely that they will fit him until 16 lbs or thereabouts.
Because these diapers are not bleached, it is not apparent when baby has had a bowel movement, requiring further inquiry from the parent. With the Huggies or Pampers being white, discoloration of the diaper is immediately obvious without unsealing the tabs.
Availability and Cost
They are available at Amazon, Drugstore.com, Whole Foods and Mollie Stones. Amazon regularly has pricebreaks on the Seventh Generation product line and as a result, each diaper cost less than that Huggies Supremes or Overnights, with the same quality of absorbency. I estimated that I got them for $.25 each. Best prices to be had at 1800diapers.com.
Worth It
We are thrilled with these diapers and as we are getting more familiar with our son's schedule, we know when he needs "the big boy diaper" as we refer to these. We have never had a leak, ever. No blowouts, which happened frequently with the Huggies and Pampers! No leaking.
No more clothing changes after nap time for us now and we will continue to use these diapers in conjunction with the mainstream brands.
