Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie''s plot.
Teen sex comedies have been around for over two decades by now and while there are a lot of dumb ones there are some good ones. Most notably Superbad helped spark popularity among the genre and bring it some credibility. It showed that sex comedies could be raunchy with gross out scenes and still be mature and have a heart. Surprisingly not too many blantant rip offs have been made trying to capture the feel of that movie. Then Sex Drive came out, it went ignored, and I didn't see it till recently and it made me wonder why it never did well. It is like Superbad but is its own movie and never feels like a cheap subsitute.
The plot revolves around Ian, a high school senior who has a tough time getting girls works in a shopping mall. His friends Lance, full of confidence in getting girls and his childhood friend Felicia. Ian starts talking to a girl online, he lies to her saying he's a football player to impress her. She invites him to visit her promising him sex. Not wanting to refuse the offer Ian steals his tough older brother's prized car and he sets off to Knoxville with Lance and Felicia.
It is a relatively simple premise and works as a road movie. The idea of meeting someone online and going to meet them is new and I don't believe has been done before. The ideas presented are mostly pretty original including running into an Amish town where they are celebrating living like the rest of the world for a day. Most of the gags are well thought out and the humor is excellent.
The cast is great and I'm looking forward to seeing more from the young actors. Josh Zuckerman is great in the lead role, he is charming and feels completely natural as someone we can all relate to. Clark Duke is good as his friend who is better at getting girls then him, he brings a sense of sweetness to his role and is always entertaining to watch. Amanda Crew plays the lead female role and has a really good performance. She is well casted and feels very realistic. James Mardsen plays Ian's older tough brother who rides a motorcycle. Even though his character is rather steroyped it works for the movie and even contains a nice twist. Seth Green shows up in his full on sarcastic mode as an Amish. It is a great cameo and steals the scenes he is in.
For most movies there is not much of a difference between the R rated version and the unrated one. That is not the case here as the unrated version is much more graphic than the R one. Random full on nudity just appears out of nowhere several times throughout. Most of the sex conversations are much longer and contain much more graphic dialoge. So long as your not easily offended then you should enjoy this film for what it is. And its rare when a teen sex comedy comes around with this much quality.
Overall his was a very good movie, often very funny and plenty of jokes and humorous situations to fill up the movie. Lots of funny cameos are made including Kyle Gass and Seth Green is excellent. I'm still trying to figure out why this movie failed so bad, it was very funny and was actually a quality movie akin to Superbad, but not a ripoff. It did have poor marketing making it look like some generic teen movie but that is not the case. If your looking for a good laugh on a Friday night then rent this, just be prepared if you watch the unrated version. One of the best comdies of 2008 along with Role Models, Tropic Thunder, and Pineapple Express, come to think of it last year had some solid comedies, and this is one of them. Don't let the title fool you this is easily as good as Superbad and contains as much heart.
