| naphtalia's Full Review: Sexy Adult Womens Halloween Costumes Naughty Nun R... |
I've spent several years working as a theatrical dresser and occasional costume designer. Now, I work part time in a shop that is half dedicated to costumes. Needless to say, where costumes are concerned, I have strong feelings.
I want to see more adults and children to take time to look in their own closets and find pieces that can be theatrically put together. I still think a kid in dad's terrycloth robe with a matching towel tied around his head makes a perfectly charming nativity shepherd. I don't see the need to spend $30 to get that costume.
I also take special pleasure in costumes that can - in whole or in part - be used as part of one's normal wardrobe. For this reason, I love this naughty nun! Take away the headpiece, and you have a black mini dress with a white collar, or (if you're like me) a long black top.
There are a number of "Naughty Nun" costumes. All are based on the classic image of how nuns dress. Of course, different orders have different ways of dressing, and the traditional dress does change over time. That said, the traditional and familiar outfit most know consists of a coif, a veil, a habit, a belt, sleeves, a Cross, a ring, underskirts, a scapular, shoes, and card. The traditional outfit is made out of wool, linen, serge or cotton.
This naughty nun costume is made out of black nylon/spandex. It has lots of stretch to get around a variety of sizes while remaining form fitting. For this reason, if you have some lumps and bumps, you might want to consider wearing a body shaper with this. The dress is on its own is merely a long-sleeved mini-dress. The sleeves are bell shaped and open wide at the wrists. This gives them a really nice flounce for dancing. The neckline is not cut low on this. Neither is the back. I was always taught that a lady should only reveal one part of herself at a time. If you're going to show off your legs, you should cover your top section. A low, plunging neckline should be paired with a slightly longer skirt. This follows that rule. It's a great dress for someone with great legs. If you're long waisted, however, this will be too short on you.
I know the white collar is a not a good look for everyone, but I find I can dress it up with a large pin or pendant necklace and it frames the jewelry well.
What makes this a nun's outfit, however, is the coif and veil. The white and black headpiece are comfy to wear and give the impression without being too literal. They are also easy to remove if it gets too hot and sweaty.
Another of the things I like with this outfit is that someone has had the good taste to not include a plastic Cross or a Rosary to dress this up. The outfit is simple. Adding religious symbols could only serve to offend. Other naughty nun outfits I've seen not only include these. I find that in poorer taste than the idea of a naughty nun which is just parody or satire.
This costume comes in two sizes. According to the manufacturer, S/M will fit women from sizes 2-8, M/L fits 10-14. (Thank heaven for spandex). Because my legs are not my best feature, when I wore this, I wore it with a pair of black capri pants, skipped the coif and veil and slapped on a 2-foot tall pink beehive. (Everyone needs to make a fashion statement. Mine statement was that I had no taste.) Usually, I recommend black fishnet pantyhose or thigh high stockings with this look.
Political correctness still lives in this day and age. It pays to be aware that this costume may be offensive to some. I have no problem with offending people if there is a purpose or a principle behind it. I also know the importance of knowing one's audience. This is a costume to share with a very specific crowd.
