Pros:Very Cheap. 100% Plastic. Reusable. Very Durable.
Cons:Must be matched to correct size fitting. See "cons" section in review.
The Bottom Line: The best way to correctly remove Sharkbite compression fittings. Works perfectly and is very cheap (about $2).
Sharkbite Disconnect Clips are a necessary tool if you use a Sharkbite compression fitting.

In other words, please buy one if you have or are planning to buy the Sharkbite compression fitting.
There are different size disconnect clips
Just like there are different sizes of copper piping
Just like there are different sizes of compression fittings
You have a 3/4 inch copper water line you are replacing. You need to replace 4 feet of pipe. You want to use the Sharkbite system to complete the job.
You would purchase:
1) The necessary copper pipe. About 5 feet of pipe, better to have too much than not enough.
2) Two 3/4 inch Sharkbite Straight Through Compression Fittings.
3) A 3/4 inch Sharkbite Disconnect Clip.
Assuming you already have a pipe cutter or hacksaw, and sandpaper to remove any burrs left over from your pipe cutting. You can complete the job, and also undo the job thanks to the disconnect clip.
So why do you need the disconnect clip?
Well you don't if you make the perfect connection of the new copper pipe and fittings in one try and never make a future change to your project.
But what if:
You make all your sharkbite connection fittings, turn the
main water back on and have a leak because you did not
push the fitting on to the pipe far enough?
You need to take the fitting(s) off and place correctly on
the copper pipe.
What if you connect one side uneven (fitting to pipe)?
You need to take the fitting off and put it back on
What if sometime in the future you wish you replaced 10
feet of copper piping or added a 90 degree elbow
You need to take the fitting off and make necessary
All of the questions above have one best answer for removal of fittings and correction of problem(s). The Sharkbite Disconnect Clip! Needle nose pliers can be used to remove Sharkbite compression fittings as an alternative, but it is not recommended to do so. You can wreck the lip (also called release collar) of a Sharkbite compression fitting by using pliers. You could wreck the pipe by bending it or you could even scratch it. Possibly causing irreparable damage. Needle nose pliers are also more difficult to use for removal even if you do it without creating a new problem.
Disconnecting a Joint
Instructions per back of package:
"Push the disconnecting clip against the release collar
and pull the pipe with a twisting action"
That's all the instruction provided. Let me add some further detail.
I recommend pushing the disconnect clip on to the pipe
above the connection. The clip looks like a small orange
horse shoe made of plastic. The clip will lock onto the
pipe, push the clip against the compression fitting very
firmly. Hold the clip firmly against the fitting and
simultaneously twist the pipe (clockwise or
counterclockwise, does not matter). The piping will slowly
be released from the fitting. It may take several full 360
degree turns of the pipe to disconnect. All you have to do
now is remove the clip from the pipe. You can use your
hands/fingers to pull it off.
Disconnect clip properties:
A) Orange Colored
B) Horse shoe shaped
C) About as heavy as a pencil. (Very lightweight)
D) Is 100% made of plastic.
E) The disconnect clip is approximately $2 in most
F) Has one job and one job only, removing Sharkbite

There is only one con to these disconnect clips. You must buy the correct size and use it only on the corresponding sized Sharkbite Compression Fitting.
You have a 3/4 inch compression fitting, you need a 3/4 inch disconnect clip.
You have a 1 inch compression fitting, you need a 1 inch disconnect clip.
and so on.... thankfully they are cheap and can be used over and over again.
