SHARP HALF PINT MICROWAVE : My Lil' Red Nuker and Me

Written: Oct 23 '00 (Updated Mar 25 '01)
Pros:Small, lightweight, and affordable with a stylish design
Cons:Limited capacity for the serious nuker of foods
The Bottom Line: is that Sharp has combined a stylish design with a compact microwave in a variety of decorative colors. This is the perfect selection for any kitchen.

Until last month, I was still using my HUGE Kenmore Microwave that had been in the family for at least a hundred years or what seemed like it. This thing was a dinosaur that measured about 20 X 15 X 20 or thereabouts and weighed a ton. I still have it in the garage in hopes that it will be deemed an antique and I will make lots of money off of it.

In With The New

We recently gave our kitchen a facelift. Nothing major just hung some tin signs, new prints, yellow curtains, and new cannisters. Our kitchen is what one might consider small. If more than one person is attempting to cook at a time you are bumping butts or reaching over each other to grab a spice.

We needed a smaller microwave to make our space more usable. This is where the new Sharp Half Pint comes in. I immediately fell in love with the modern colors and the size of the unit plus at just under $100.00, it was a solid investment.

I chose the red model although the Blueberry color is really "sharp". The red went perfectly with our decor and it just screamed "Buy Me, I am trendy!" so of course I did.

My primary reasons for purchasing this particular microwave was because of the compact size, the new modern look, and the selection of colors available.

My old trusty Kenmore was a major ordeal to clean because of the size and weight. The Half Pint is easy to move around and even easier to clean because the size and weight.

What About Performance?

To be completely honest, I am an occasional nukee. This microwave is not meant for full course dinner preparation or even large food items. The capacity is pretty small at .5 cubic feet so it was perfect for me since I use the microwave primarily for heating and reheating food.

Don't let the sleek new looks of this little Half Pint foul you. It is more than just looks. The Half Pint boasts a whopping 600 watts of power so performance is comparable to those bulky old units.

The inside turning table makes warming food a snap since you don't have to open the door every minute and rotate your bowl. Just pop in your TV dinner and walk away.

The other feature that I use most often on a microwave is the defrost but in my old unit, the meat would always cook unless I kept a close eye on it. With the Sharp, it has what they describe as a 3 cycle power defrost that doesn't allow this to happen and the meat defrosts without the cooked edges or the hole melting in the bag from the grease. So far I have been very pleased with this option.

Now for the feature of all features, the Instant Popcorn button makes perfect pop each and every time. This would be important to you too if you have ever tried getting the smell of burned popcorn out of your house. It is horrible. With this feature, you never have to worry about it.

This microwave has quite a few automatic settings but I haven't used most of them so I can't really give you an objective opinion on their performance.

Any Problems With Your Nuker?

Not a one so far.

As I stated earlier, I am an occasional nukee so this microwave is perfect for me but for someone that uses them on a regular basis for more than just reheating or occasional cooking, it might not be the answer. You certainly won't be able to prepare that Thanksgiving dinner in it.

Final Thoughts?

My only concern is now when will they come out with large appliances to match the groovy new colors in my small appliances? My suggestion would be to stick with white large appliances in the future and accessorize!
