| marytara's Full Review: Sharp R-510CW Microwave Oven |
For the past several years my husband and I had the smallest wimpiest little convenience microwave and I was fed up. Not only did a regular dinner plate not fit inside, it burned popcorn. After a popcorn incident that left the whole kitchen and microwave smelling like a fire, I knew what I wanted for my 29th birthday (in late June 2001). So, I asked for a new microwave. My needs were pretty simple. I wanted one that worked.
My husband, being wise, asked that I help pick out my new microwave. After going to a few stores, price shopping and looking at all the features. We decided on the Sharp Full Size Microwave Oven R-510EK
The Sharp Full Size Microwave Oven R-510EK is a full-size microwave. It can be wall (or under cabinet mounted) but ours is kept on the countertop. This microwave has 2.0 cubic feet of capacity so its quite roomy. The external dimensions are 24" (w) x 13 3/8" (h) x 19 1/8" (d). It also has a generous turntable that is 16 inches in diameter. This particular model is black (EK) though there is also a white version (EW).
The Sharp Full Size Microwave Oven R-510EK is no wimp with its 1200 wattage. I've been very pleased in the 6 months that I have used this (daily) how quickly and evenly food cooks, defrosts and reheats.
Lots of buttons to push
One thing I really liked about the Sharp Full Size Microwave Oven R-510EK was the attractive control panel and display. Instead of actual raised buttons, its a flat panel that you just press with your fingertip. Everything is as easy as pushing a button with this microwave. It really doesn't get much simpler. You might think at first that it could be confusing but its really not. If I can do it, then anyone can!
Underneath the display there are 3 large purple buttons that are prominently placed because you will use them alot.
Popcorn - no more sitting around counting seconds in between pops. I haven't burned it yet while using this button. Since this was part of the reason why I wanted a new microwave, I'm very pleased!
Keep Warm - This feature will help you keep your food hot for up to 15 minutes. Its very useful for when you are making some other side dishes, or a salad, or waiting for everyone in your family to come to the table.
Minute Plus - This is a one-touch button for cooking on the Hi Setting. This way you don't need to play around with the number keypad if you want to cook up something simple on Hi.
The next set of buttons on the control panel are called the Instant Action green buttons. These are pre-set for common foods you might prepare. All you do is press one time for 1 serving (for up to 8 servings) and the microwave is pre-programmed to cook these foods:
Baked Potato
Rice
Ground Meat
Frozen Vegetables
Fresh Vegetables
Frozen Entrees
The center portion of the control panel is called the Reheat Center. There is a single orange button for Reheat and then you select a number for the following common reheatable foods.
1. Dinner Plate
2. Soup
3. Pizza
4. Fresh Rolls/Muffin
5. Frozen Rolls/Muffin
6. Beverage
I REALLY like this microwave for its Compu Defrost feature. This Microwave can defrost a package of FROZEN CHICKEN in no time at all and its so easy to use. Just press the button for chicken pieces and a weight will come up (1/2 pound). Press the button however many times you need to get to your desired package size. It will give you directions at various incremements of the defrosting: For example, turn, pull-apart, stand, etc. There are 3 different defrost settings that are programmed in.
Ground Meat
Steak/Chops
Chicken Pieces
And of course, if you don't want to use any of the pre-programmed features, instant action, reheat or defrost buttons you can use the old reliable Standard Features and punch in the cook or defrost time manually. There is also a button to control the power levels (Lo/Hi), a START button, and a clock.
Overall, this microwave has been great. I think I've used it almost every day since we've gotten it and really have no complaints. The Sharp Full Size Microwave Oven R-510EK both looks and works great and is easy to use! Sharp is a reliable brand and the product has a 3 year warranty. For more info visit
