| therichpeasant's Full Review: Sharp VC-A565U VHS VCR |
I purchased a brand new Sharp A-565 VCR from Best Buy on sale about a year ago for about US$50. I already had a Hi-Fi VCR, so this was just a spare one to tape programs off the TV.
What's not to like about this machine? The price is right and it comes feature-packed. I've owned a few VCRs but this one seems to have been built with the average user in mind, with many features so practical you may wonder why it took so long for VCR manufacturers to incorporate these features into their machines.
The A-565 has 4-heads which is pretty much standard now, but used to be a high-end feature. The Double Azimuth heads provide a crisp and clear picture and there aren't too many lines across the screen when using the Cue or Review functions. No qualms at all about picture quality. Other great features include EZ set-up (where the VCR automatically adjusts the channels and clocks without you having to go through the process yourself). I love the rewind and fast forward speed which claims to rewind any tape in less than 1 minute. It also has a Skip-Search function which fast forwards the video search in 30 second intervals and then resumes playback (The reverse functions also does this but in 20 second intervals). Another nifty feature is the Auto Zero Back function which automatically finds 0.00.00 on the counter with the touch of one button (no need to press the Rewind button).
For parents, it has a Tamper Proof feature that prevents accidental change of any of your pre-set modes by your kids (or spouse!)
Is there anything bad about the A-565? Well, their timer set-up is easier than most other VCRs I've tested, but still not as intuitive as you'd like. The large and feature-packed remote control does feel a bit flimsy. But these are really small things compared to many of the big things that the Sharp does well.
If you are looking for a second VCR, look no further. If you are looking for a first VCR, perhaps spend a few extra dollars and buy the Sharp-H965 which is the same model, but the Hi-Fi Stereo model.
