dlstewart's Full Review: Sharpie Metallic Silver Marker
Silver writing lends an elegant look to greeting cards, scrapbooking, posters or any presentation. Sharpie Metallic Ink Permanent Markers help create just the right image.
Description
These markers are silver in color so that they do not become confused with other Sharpie markers you might own. They measure about 5 1/2" long x 1/2" wide -- the same size as other Sharpie markers. On the barrel is written: Sharpie Metallic Permanent Marker Fine Point. The silver cap fits snugly on the end of the pen so that it does not become lost.
The manufacturer notes that these markers are designed for writing on dark surfaces. These markers write on glass, metal, photos, foils, coated paper and most plastics. They cannot be used on cloth. The ink is nontoxic and permanent. The manufacturer also says the ink is fade and water resistant.
My Experiences
This Sharpie marker is easy to use. The ink glides smoothly from the fine-point tip. It's a joy to write with it! The fine point does not produce scratchy, thin lines. When printing with the marker, the lines look bolded and are easy to read. However, when handwriting in cursive, the writing is not as easy to read. Letters such as "e" and "o" and the circle in "d" or "b" tend to fill with silver ink. Yet despite the filled letters, the handwriting looks fancier than an ordinary pen or marker. This marker is also great for drawing images as long as fine detail is not required. While the ink applies smoothly, sometimes darker paper colors show a bit through the silver ink. I notice glossy papers tend to show their dark color through the silver ink more than matte papers.
I have used these silver markers on glossy paper (black, medium navy blue and forest green). I also tried the marker on a light sky blue paper, but the silver ink did not show well against that color. However, I have also written on white 20-pound photocopy paper, card stock, as well as colored postcard stock (hot pink), and the silver ink shows well against those papers.
The other day I needed to identify some equipment so that it would be returned to me. The equipment was made of black metal and plastic. The Sharpie silver marker worked great and the printing looked nice.
These markers do have an odor. I find that when I use the marker for longer than ten minutes, the smell begins to bother me. I have to cap the marker and put it aside. One great feature is that the silver ink quickly dries.
I have not had a problem with the ink fading. As a test of the ink's water-resistance, I wrote on a postcard and let the ink dry. Then I ran the postcard under a heavy stream of water. The ink did not smear. I ran my fingers over the ink, and they came away only wet with water. The inked words looked great.
Purchasing
I bought these markers in a 2-pack from Amazon.com for $2.49. I had a $5.00 coupon good for an order over a certain amount, and my order needed another $2.00 to qualify. So I ordered the 2-pack of Sharpie Silver Metallic Markers.
Staples sells the silver markers for $9.99 a dozen, and a 4-pack for $4.49. Office Max offers the 4-pack for $3.99. Office Depot sells a dozen for $11.98, a 4-pack for $3.35, and 2-pack for $1.99.
Summary
I am very glad that I purchased the Sharpie Metallic Ink Permanent Markers with the silver ink. These markers jazz up my correspondence, greeting cards and add a festive touch to special event cards and invitations. The markers are also great for writing my name on dark metal and plastic items that I loan to people. I have a higher return rate when my name is easily noticed!
I hope you have found this review useful.
