Freak369's Full Review: Sharpie Metallic Silver Marker
I have always loved Sharpie products; I got hooked on them about ten years ago when I picked up a fine point permanent marker of theirs and started using it for anything and everything around the house. Even though most of their markers say not for letter writing, I do use them for that too! The metallic line from Sanford / Sharpie is one of the best on the market because they are made to weather the storm and put up with even the heaviest of hands. You can press on the tip of this and it wont bend, write letters with it [or at the very least use it to doodle on the envelopes] and it seems like it never runs out ink. About the only time this disappointed me was when I got the bright idea to use this on some Shrinky Dinks, it didnt ruin them but it didnt have the nice sparkle that I expected from it when they plastic was heated up. Even so, Ive found a ton of other uses for this around the house and for crafts for under three bucks at most office supply stores, this is one metallic marker that you simply cant live without.
Sanford / Sharpie Fine Point Metallic Silver Marker
Just as the name implies, this is a fine point metallic marker that can be used on almost any type of surface imaginable. This will bleed through thin paper like loose leaf but as long as you have some scrap paper under it, you shouldnt run into any major problems. If you are someone that slacks when writing [lets the tip rest in one spot too long] then you might get some ink pooling every now and them, just keep the marker moving and things should be perfect. I guess you could call me a dot freak, I like to print things then add dots at the end of the letters to accent them. I have no idea where I picked up this habit but its something that Ive been doing for years. This type of writing looks great for personalizing things and for the longest time I would write my kids name on their toy boxes or things with black permanent markers then I got my hands on this and it was all over. Nothing was safe; anything that stood for even a minute got marked in some manner or fashion.
The Sharpie Metallic Marker is easy to use, requires no pumping or shaking and even if you leave the cap off of it for a while, all you need to do to restart the ink flow it to doodle with it for a couple of seconds. The longest I ever left the cap off of this was overnight and the next day when I found it uncapped on my desk I thought for sure it was a goner. Much to my surprise, all it took was about ten seconds for the ink flow to start up and for it to start writing like it was brand new. The ink dries almost instantly and doesnt smear so you can use it on things around the kitchen and not have to worry about them getting splashed or wet. The smear factor is one of my biggest concerns when it comes to any type of marker; if it smears or the ink doesnt dry fast enough its pretty much useless to me. So far I;ve used this one almost every type of paper, cardboard, poster board, plastic, manila envelopes and file jackets, craft projects and the kids love it for writing on their book covers and for school projects.
This looks like other similar sized Sharpie markers but the silver color to the body of it makes it easy to spot in a drawer so you never have to hunt around for it or pick up by mistake when you are looking for another color to work with. The cap snaps back onto the tip of it tightly so it doesnt accidentally come apart if you toss it in your backpack imagine what a mess that would make. It does have a pocket clip on the cap but given the size of this I really cant see many people slipping this into a pocket protector and carrying it around comfortably. The feel of it when you are writing is nice, theres no rubber comfort grip to it but even so, your hands dont take a beating when you use this for extended periods of time. If you do happen to get the ink on your hands or fingers just wash with warm soapy water, if you get a lot on your skin it may take a while for it to wear off but its certified non-toxic so it isnt like its going to kill you.
Alternative Uses
You can use this for a lot of stuff around the house; addressing envelopes [not for mailing, the machines have a hard time reading the ink], doing crafts, scrapbooking, adding captions to photographs, writing on CD cases and cassettes, mirrors and glass [test it first to see if it can be easily removed], computer cables and even to touch up scratched Lego pieces. Since this is certified AP non-toxic its safe for kids to work with and use and as far as fumes, to be honest, I dont really smell anything when I am using this but I dont have the best nose in the world so dont use me a judge on odors. I like using this on the white spots of Polaroid film; it dries almost instantly on it and gives it a little bit of sparkle.
The Bottom Line
I have a lot of different metallic markers around the house and most of them have specific uses, because of the fine point of this marker it can be used for large and small tasks but still gives you the ability to be in complete control of where the ink ends up. You can find these at your local office supply store for about two to three dollars a piece [the larger the store, the lower the price]. They are also available in sets as well as one color multi packs thats the most cost effective way to go. If youve never used these then stick with the individual pack to see if you like the way it write but I can almost guarantee that once you pick this up and start writing with it, youll love it!
