Pros: A movie with heart. The good guys may not always win, but sometimes they do.
Cons: Not much I can find.
The Bottom Line: This is a 'thinking' person's movie, a movie for people who don't just watch a movie for a few chuckles or to see someone's butt get kicked.
Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
I've read Stephen King ever since I was in my 20's. When I was younger I thought the only author was Louis L'amour. I read westerns, but he was the main one. Then one day I wanted to try something new. I thought, what the hey, I'll try this Stephen King. He's nuts, so the people say that seem to have it all down. I wanted to see what all the hubbub was about.
I'd read Pet Semetary first. I was impressed. Finally I read The Shawshank Redemption. I liked it a lot. Then I finally watched the movie. I didn't expect much, because for the most part the movies don't seem to live up to the books. Stephen King has a unique and insightful way of writing. But when I saw the movie, well, I was touched. That's the only way I can say it.
In this world of white men afraid of saying anything about the 'black' man, and of the black man forever dissing the white man, it's hard to find a movie where race is not an important factor. This movie has the class to push all that aside and just tell a story as it was meant to be told.
One man was sent to the pen unjustly, and while he was there he used his skills to the best of his ability. Other people, mainly the warden, took advantage of this skill. While this poor guy was there, he met another man, a man of another race, but a man he liked and trusted. That was all that mattered.
This movie stars Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman, two men who does an excellent job playing the parts of two men in a tough situation. I don't know if a movie based on a Stephen King movie has ever come out this great, not that I know of.
It sure had a story to tell.
