Sheer Cover Mineral Foundation...Mix, Apply, Itch

Written: Mar 06 '07 (Updated Mar 06 '07)
Pros:can mix foundations for a custom shade; easy to apply;
Cons:expensive; caused itching; caked in fine lines; covers what? Requires membership for discounted prices
The Bottom Line: It's hard to recommend this product after my experience. But it may be perfect for your skin. Give the trial kit a try, just don't commit to Membership until later.

I’ll be completely honest when I say I think I was still half asleep when I watched the infomercial for Sheer Cover Makeup. Better yet, maybe I was in a crazed state of mine when I decided to pick up the phone and actually give them a call.

The infomercial was maybe 30 minutes long. During that course of time Lezza Gibbons who is their spokeswoman and undoubtedly has a passion about this makeup introduces the products and many of the women who have great success. I watched, amazed at how women who had major skin trouble and/or flaws effortlessly and quickly applied the makeup. The results were astounding.

Since these women had such amazing results….the look of flawless skin after covering up scars, acne, wrinkles, broken veins….then I thought this product might just be what I was looking for. My skin has given me problems over the last several years. Bouts of acne, oily in the heat and humidity of summer and dry in the winter, I’ve inherited my dad’s tiny broken veins around my nose (hello laser treatments), and those infamously noted crow’s feet that had begun to emerge around my eyes. So I called up the Sheer Cover number, ordered, and anxiously awaited the arrival of my trial 30 day kit. But here’s the crazy part, like an idiot I let them talk me into signing up for their Club Membership which would automatically send me a new makeup kit every 90 days. I would be locked in at their “low price” of $29.95 a month…..but I’ll get into all the details a little further on in the review.

So the “trial kit” which cost me $29.95 shipping and handling arrived. In that 30-day kit was:
Mineral Foundation in 2 shades (I picked my own shade out of Light, Medium, Tan or Dark)
Duo Concealer in 2 shades
Nourishing Moisturizer with SPF 15
Purifying Cleanser
Studio Powder Brush
Travel Brush (AKA All-in-One Brush)
Scoop for measuring out powder for mixing or adding to All-in-One Brush
Instructional DVD – Visual Application Guide
There may have been a few other things included but if so I can’t recall what they were. I believe after checking out their website they have included some additional items to what I received 2 years ago.

What Sheer Cover Claims
Developed by Pauline Soli, the Sheer Cover Foundations contain 100% pure minerals from the earth. Ingredients in the foundations are as follows: Zinc Oxide (12.00%). Other Ingredients: Boron Nitride, Bisabolol, Aspalathus Linearis Leaf Extract, May Contain ( /-): Bismuth Oxychloride (CI 77163), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Mica, Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499)
Sheer Cover Foundations do not contain any preservatives, talc, chemical dyes, fragrances, or silicones. They also claim that even if you skin is blotchy, ruddy, or blemished, you can literally (this part gets under my skin…no pun) brush away those imperfections. They also claim that their makeup not only helps a person achieve a flawless look but it is also good for their skin.

My Experience
Again, as I said above the kit arrived and in pretty quick time from the day I ordered. I quickly opened it up and decided to give it a try. Using the makeup the first time took a little while because I had to mix my two shades to get the right shade for my skin tone. The shades I selected for my complexion which is light/medium with slight yellow undertones (oh and the pink from Rosacea which I didn’t know about at the time) was the medium shades, called Buff and Latte .

Applying the foundation was simple. After mixing the 2 foundation powders I took the included application brush, dipped the brush into the powder, turned it upside down (brush bristles up) and tapped it lightly on the counter as instructed. This tapping is to get the powder down into the brush bristles so application is quick, easy, and even. I then applied the powder to my face using small circular motions. Or you can mix your foundations along with your Finishing Powder and place in the barrel of the All-in-One brush. With the cap on the brush you tap (bristles down) lightly for the powder to be distributed in the brush. Remove the cap and apply in same small circular motions.

As I just mentioned, the hardest part was blending the 2 foundations to get my correct shade. Applying was simple. But the end result wasn’t what I had so hoped for. At first my face looked pretty good, not so “made-up” and since I don’t wear make-up all the time I really wanted something that was going to make my skin look natural. But after a couple of hours my skin started to itch. I figured it would just take some time for my skin to adjust to using a new product and I would go about it slowly rather than shocking my skin by using this new mineral makeup… daily.

Yeah, right….so I thought I could fool myself I suppose. Several applications later the itchy sensations stopped. But hours into wear my skin would feel as though I had tons of heavy liquid foundation on and I would end up with that awful makeup shine. Also, as the day would go on, areas where I had applied concealer and foundation would begin to look creased and caked, especially the areas around my eyes. I also had a difficult time covering up those breakouts. Even after using the concealer and foundation you could still see them. My face certainly wasn’t responding the way those ladies faces/skin did on the infomercial!!

To make matters worse I began having little tiny bumps appear all over my face. I’ve been diagnosed with Rosacea since using this product. I’m definitely not blaming Sheer Cover for the Rosacea, but I think this product did cause my skin to flare up when I think back on it. After the bumps began appearing I stopped using the products that came with my “trial kit”. By that time I had already received the 90-day supply of makeup from the company. Unfortunately I never sent it back. I don’t know what I was thinking and now I kick myself because once the kit arrives a customer has 60 days to return it.

The Guarantee
Yes, Sheer Cover does guarantee their product. They claim if a customer is not completely satisfied they can return the products, even if the containers are empty, for a full refund minus the shipping and handling charges. I’m back to kicking myself for not returning the kit.

What Else Do They Offer
Well, this is what I consider the gimmick I suppose. You have to be a Club Member and receive the automatic 90-day supply of makeup to get their discounted “Club Price”. You can check out their website for more information at www.sheercover.com or you can call Customer Service at 1-800-506-6281. Sheer Cover has other products besides the mineral foundations and concealers such as:
Mascara
Eye liner
Cream Highlighters
Lipglosses

Final Thoughts
Maybe you can tell that I wasn’t overly happy with the product. Again, it’s a breeze to apply which I really liked. But the end result did not create a happy ending with this face.

I personally can not recommend this product. However, I’m sure there are plenty of people out there who have great success with it or else Sheer Cover wouldn’t still be in business. Also, if you don’t wear makeup very often, it’s not so cost effective because you will continue to receive a kit every 3 months unless you cancel your Club Membership. Again, you also have to be a “Club Member” in order to receive the discounted price.

As one Epinions reviewer suggested which I thought was a fabulous idea, if you are interested in this product ask around to see if someone you know owns it, then try it out. Or order a “trial kit” to give it a try just don’t let them pressure you in signing up for the Club Membership until you are certain this is a product you really like. Then if you think it’s for you, call ‘em back. Remember….they will always want your business.

Thanks for reading!!
