Pros: Service is willing to make up for shortfalls
Cons: Rude service
rooms unclean
long wait for any help from staff
The Bottom Line: Unless you're a looking for a sleepy hotel in East midtown, avoid this place. Service was horrid, and the room condition wasn't acceptable.

3 others and myself decided to make a stay at the Shelburne in April 2004 for a first trip to the big city. We found a great deal online to sucker us into this sleepy hotel in east midtown.
Lesson learned: You get what you pay for. When we first arrived we were told that our room wasn't ready at 5pm, 1 hour after the normal checkin time. To compensate, they offered us a free round of drinks at their partner restaurant, Rare. Unfortunately because of miss communication, it took us 20 minutes of arguing with staff and going back and forth to get things settled for our free drink.
We had our round of drinks which were quite pleasing, along with some mediocre food. After waiting another hour, we were dismayed to learn that they'd take another 2 hours to finish getting our room ready.
We decide then to just check in our luggage and check out the town. When we return at 10pm, they STILL haven't cleaned our room, but fortunately upgrade us to a full 1 bedroom suite w/ kitchen and living room. When we get to our room, we're suprised to find out that its a horrid smelling smoking room when we checked repeatedly prior to make sure it was NON SMOKING.
The bathroom and kitchen were hardly cleaned at all and showed numerous stains. The pull out bed in the living room was plagued with lumps that constantly prodded us when we slept in the living room.
We also did not have sheets or bedding for the pullout. It took them over an hour to get us a collection of 3 pillows, and 3 sheets, but NO blankets. It took them 40 minutes to bring up our luggage and they were MISSING one piece of our luggage. That took them another 30 minutes to find. Needless to say it was a horrid first day in the big apple.
Service was spotty, failed to address the missing blanket issue until our third night of stay, and also continuously walked into our room after just two knocks and little to no time to answer the door.
The neighborhood around the hotel is pretty boring. Great for people looking for a business trip and need a nice stay, but terrible for 4 young adults in their twenties. Its around 6 blocks from Grand Central station, which has enough subway connections to get you anywhere you want around town.
Empire state building and Macys are also within close walking distance.
